Book Description

Since 1970 the number of American companies with operations outside the United States has expanded dramatically. Most multinational corporations make an effort to prepare employees and their families for international assignments, but typically do not do much to prepare them for their eventual return. When they return to the domestic organization, more than half of returning expatriates express frustration and anger over the fact that their unique and powerful new skills are not utilized, and many leave the company that sent them overseas in the first place. Shepard examines each stage of the expatriation and repatriation process in detail, providing practical exercises and resources to help the shrewd corporate manager create a program that recognizes international employees as the valuable assets that they are.

Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

"Probably more than any other 'training' expense, an expatriate assignment is truly an investment in an individual employee. The present corporate mind-set tends to make employees responsible for their own future development. But the overseas employee is much too valuable a resource to a company to leave their future to chance. A solid and well-thought-out program is a must."--Michael D. DeVoll, Managing Director, AT&T Asia Pacific Group Ltd., Hong Kong

"Shepard has captured the essence of the challenges faced by corporations and individuals making the expatriation decision."-- Doug Ripley, Training Director, ADC Telecommunications "Finally we have a book granting equal attention to families of corporate executives abroad! Managing Cross-Cultural Transition is a remarkably comprehensive and valuable tool for corporations and individuals wise enough to recognize its worth."--Norma McCaig, Founder, Global Nomads International; President, Global Nomad Resources

"Shepard has done a fine job of laying out key expatriate issues. There's considerable food for thought here. Whether you dip into this book or read it cover to cover, your time will be well repaid."--Craig Storti, Director, Craig Storti and Associates; Author, The Art of Coming Home

"Having been temporarily relocated to a foreign environment when I was a youth, I now find myself doing the same with my family, twenty-five years later. I am convinced that being prepared and aware is the key to success, and success involves the whole family."--Trevor Hindson, Telstra Corporation, Melbourne, Australia
