"This is a very special book and one that has significantly improved from edition to edition even though it was very good to start with. It is essentially about global leadership and it intends to increase the effectiveness of international business leaders in unfamiliar international contexts by providing much of the necessary background familiarity. While most comparative management texts focus mainly on cultural differences, this book is special because it offers historical backgrounds and sociopolitical contexts that are usually ignored. These are helpful contexts for understanding how someone from a different national culture contexts him/herself. The span of the historical contexts offered is quite amazing. The Korean section begins with Korean prehistory, and the Chinese section is also all encompassing.

The real value of this book is that it is intended to be practical and useful. The information is intended to help managers in international business situations helpful tips to avoid culture based blunders that would wreck negotiations before they even begin; tactics for avoiding or dealing with conflicts or disagreements in culturally appropriate ways; and strategies for negotiating effectively - both in general and in the specific international contexts that managers could face in their international business careers. The emphasis is on strategies and tactics for effective communication, relation-ship building, and negotiating in culturally sensitive ways.

What is truly amazing is the scope achieved in this book. The authors have managed to offer high value insights for virtually every nation and region in which one could imagine that business could be conducted. This is a major reference work that could usefully be on any international manager's bookshelf. Not only are the obvious destinations - Europe, North America, Japan, China, India - covered, but there are useful sections on the Middle East, Latin America and even Africa that would be hard to find anywhere else. And all of this is in a single book, easy to carry, comprehensive and updated right to the present. I cannot think of another book that achieves this purpose with such economy and practicality. I would certainly recommend the book as a text for students, but it is also a book that an international manager might consider carrying in his suitcase when s/he travels to Asia and may find him/herself doing business with a variety of individuals from different countries over the course of a single road trip. As an East Asia expert, very familiar with conditions in China, Japan and Korea, I am confident that these sections are very current and very helpful.

Having used this book myself a number of years ago, I can also say without reservation that this edition should replace previous ones on a manager's bookshelf. It is a lovely book filled with potential usefulness. Following its recommendations could help build a relationship and make a sale that might otherwise be lost."

About the Author

Robert Moran, Ph.D., is a Professor of Global Management, Emeritus at Thunderbird School of Global Management in Arizona, USA.

Dr. Philip R. Harris is President of Harris International, Ltd. in LaJolla, California. He is Series Editor of the Managing Cultural Differences Series and co-author of B-H books Managing Cultural Differences, Multicultural Management 2000, and Transcultural Leadership. He is on the advisory board of the European Business Review.

Sarah Moran has worked extensively in the areas of organizational and cross-cultural relations. She co-facilitated employee relations workshops with internal teams for Motorola and Intel employees to use cross-cultural management strategies to better manage global responsibilities. She has also worked with high level military nurses serving the U.S. Army, Navy and Air Force regarding fiscal priorities regarding health care concerns. As a member of the Diversity and Inclusion Council with The Hartford Company she worked implementing diversity awareness strategies to improve employee productivity. As a corporate examiner with Arizona Quality Alliance, she formulated an onsite examination strategy which included an analysis of organizational performance, development and leadership. Sarah earned her Masters in Organizational and Intercultural Communications from Arizona State University. She is currently a PhD student focusing her studies on Cross Cultural Management in the Organizational Behavior research area of Desautels Faculty of Management, McGill University, at Montreal, Canada.

Managing Cultural Differences has been the "Gold Standard" in international management education for over 30 years. It is the essential reference for the kit of every international executive across the World, and has rightfully been adopted as a primary text by over 400 college and university business programs.

I first became aware of the work of Drs. Philip R. Harris and Robert T. Moran over 30 years ago, when the first edition of Managing Cultural Differences was just a twinkle in their eyes. Since then, this steadily evolving text has always been a part of my library, informing the development of many businesses from Japan and Taiwan to India, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia.

This completely revised 7th edition, which highlights author Sarah Moran, updates the earlier work to include major new sections on the impact of terrorism and state security on cultures, and their inevitable impact on the cultural interchanges within the multinational corporation. In today's homogenized business environment, it is often difficult to appreciate the differences in how international colleagues and competitors see the World. Managing Cultural Differences gives students the base point to appreciate the significance of their counterparts' worldview, with advice on how to address the inevitable conflicts in interpersonal behavior.

An attractive summary, enthusiastic reviews,several editions, lots of schools using it, is that enough to buy it? Unfortunately not.
If you expect theory in the first unit to be well reflected in the country analysis unit, forget it. No relationship!One more unique selling proposition that is not fulfilled.
And can you trust the country unit just for factual information? Be cautious!As an european I tried some "exotic" countries in Asia and Africa,trusting it as reliable. To test it I searched for my own european country - Portugal - and I discovered that my national music was the "flamingo" (perhaps for "flamenco", associated with Spain)instead of "fado"! How can one believe in a source for "unknown" countries, when such critical cultural mistakes are made for western ones?

The seventh edition of Managing Cultural Differences is a comprehensive updating of this classic text on multiculturalism. As an academic, I have utilized previous versions of this text in my classes and strongly recommend the new edition. This tome of over 700 pages cites concise examples of how leaders must understand the value of culture when conducting business across boundaries. The book is divided into two units, including Cultural Impacts on Business and Regional Culture Specifics which present both general and specific content for global business personnel.

The authors possess a staggering wealth of experience in the global business arena which assists in showcasing their credibility. As an academic, I personally like the Mind Stretching summaries at the end of each chapter. These summaries pose further questions for the reader to ponder before progressing to subsequent chapters. I also enjoy the numerous exhibits from both primary and secondary research sources which provide further illumination on relevant topics.

I recommend the seventh edition of the Managing Cultural Differences text without reservation. I believe that as the era of globalization ensues, every academic institution that deals with global topics should utilize this landmark book.

The book is 2 books for the price of 1. Unit 1's 250+ pages is the 'meat & potatos' concept with the most important Chapter 2. If you only read 30 pages, read Chapter 2.

This unit should be standard training for foreign service, country negotiators and global business people to get beyond values like 'honest' / 'dishonest' communication and relate to each other in terms of cultural directness / indirectness (low & high context communication).

Unit 2's 250+ page is more of a reference book with details country by country for use when you need to connect with the relevant country culture.

The 1 down side (4 stars instead of 5) is that SO MUCH is packed in this 1 book as a text book that it is not easily portable to take with you on trips to foreign countries.

This is absolutely the worst textbook I've ever read. There were misspellings and gramatical errors on almost every page. There were also several instances of cultural bias, misstatement of fact, and downright ignorance. Which is quite ironic for a book titled "Managing Cultural Differences". The authors and publishers of this book should be ashamed of themselves for allowing this book to hit the shelves. This book was required for a course I was taking, and I actually felt somewhat guilty for reselling it, but I figured someone else probably needed it for a class, and would buy it regardless. Just be forewarned and don't expect much.
