It took a while to figure out how to effectively use this book, August 14, 2010
This review is from: Managing Difficult People (Harvard Business Review Case Studies) (Paperback)
I manage a team of 20+ people with diametrically opposed personalities. As I always say, management wouldn't be bad, were it not for the people. My team has the usual problems, and I hear all kinds of complaints ranging from, "My work station isn't as big as John's!" to "You always make me work late", or "I can't work with Todd" and even, "I'm pregnant with your child." I mean, enough already! I jumped on to Amazon and looked for a book to help me sort out my problems.
After several failed book searches, such as "how to kill all of your employees and get away with it" and "how do I pretend to care" I punched in, "how do I manage difficult people". Bingo.
I read all of the case studies, and even reread some to make sure that I understood the full dynamics at play. There are six scenarios and each one is reviewed by four or five industry experts. Each topic, from an obnoxious star performer to a womanizing CEO, is thoroughly examined with contrasting opinions on how to handle the problem.
I applied several of the recommendations the industry leaders made, but to no avail. It was only in the depths of my frustration that I figured out how to use this book. The book is about 200 pages long, and as such it is very easy to roll up. Once you have it rolled up, simply walk up to the employee who is bothering you and whack them on the head! It works! They haven't complained since I started using this technique!
