About the Author

Claire Houlding (nee Claassens) was born in South Africa. She started suffering from migraine headaches at about 6 years of age. The migraines have continued throughout her life and therefore inspired her to not only research, but also explore many of their countless treatment alternatives. She studied pharmacy at Rhodes University, graduating with distinction. Claire has worked as a retail pharmacist since graduation and managed, in her professional capacity, to help many desperate sufferers deal with their debilitating pain. Having been in a state of desperation herself, by suffering with blinding migraines, she was able to assist patients from a professional as well as personal perspective. In addition, she has arranged private consultations, given talks and appeared on radio. Her success in empowering innumerable patients to deal effectively with their pain, inspired her to write Managing Migraines, so that she could reach many more sufferers and provide them with the many treatment alternatives accessible to them. It has been very important to Claire to explore all effective treatment alternatives available in the management of migraines, not only from a pharmaceutical stand-point, but also from an alternative, complementary and dietary perspective. She decided to include all these various options, as well as useful lifestyle modifications in her book, in order to broaden the horizons of the many inadequately treated sufferers worldwide. She has successfully managed to reduce the frequency and severity of her own migraines so significantly, that she wrote Managing Migraines to share her knowledge and experience with other sufferers, so that they too may gain relief from their physical anguish. Claire currently resides in Vancouver, WA with her husband and son.

5.0 out of 5 stars Full of useful information, April 30, 2010
This review is from: Managing Migraines: Dealing with migraines from all perspectives ... something to help each sufferer (Paperback)
I recently had contact with the author of this book and she was so empathetic and compassionate to me about my migraine headaches. she suggested things to me that none of the doctors or neurologists I've seen over the years have bothered to suggest. I tried some of her advice- I started keeping a migraine journal and figured out my triggers from that. I also started taking omega 3, magnesium and vitamin B2. It took about 5wks, but my migraines have reduced from 5 days a month to 1 or 2 at most every 2 months. I am so grateful to her for her wholesome advice and for actually LISTENING to me. I saw that another review mentioned she wasn't a doctor. but honestly? I had better advice from her, as a migraineur and pharmacist, than I've every had from my doctors- and I've seen plenty of the years. the information in this book is short and sweet but theres loads of objective options (she doesn't tell you to use some miracle cure but helps you figure out how many choices you have). the book is not intimidating like so many of the fat books out there. I read some others, but they were so long-winded that I gave up trying to search for the hidden clues. Good for you for writing this book. thanks for getting this inforamtion out there for those of us who are sick of having migraines.

This review is from: Managing Migraines: Dealing with migraines from all perspectives ... something to help each sufferer (Paperback)
This is a great book! I found this to be an excellent source of information that covers a wide variety of possible remedies. I think this approach is extremely important as one physician or specialist may not be able to suggest alternatives other than what they are trained to treat. It is so important to take your own initiative to research all the possible solutions and keep trying to find the right combination that works for you as an individual. This book is such a good starting point for providing many suggestions that you may not have known about or even considered trying. The author has a very caring and encouraging approach to suggesting remedies and presents the information so clearly that it is easy to absorb the information and be inspired to keep trying for a solution. I'll be using it as a constant resource of information on the supplements, vitamins and therapies which may also work for my sinus headaches and general health!

5.0 out of 5 stars Why was I not told all this before?, September 12, 2008
This review is from: Managing Migraines: Dealing with migraines from all perspectives ... something to help each sufferer (Paperback)
This awesome book is full of useful information that has made such a positive difference to my life. This is the sort of information we should get from our doctors and health care providers- and sadly we aren't. It is sad that such grass-roots, good, down-to-earth, easy-to-follow advice is only now made available to migraine sufferers. I wish I had been made aware of all these options a long time ago. I could have stopped my pain so much sooner. Every migraine sufferer should own this book. Thank you for making this amazing information available to us migraine sufferers to reduce our pain at long last!!!
