5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Resource For Surviving Hyperemesis

3.0 out of 5 stars not helpful for HG
I didn't personally find this book at all helpful with hyperemesis. I had HG with my first pregnancy and bought this book in preparation for a second go around. I can't imagine anything more useless than recipes and lists of foods to satisfy cravings when it's impossible to keep down even a sip of water. I was really hoping for food advice along the lines of "here is the...

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Resource For Surviving Hyperemesis, June 2, 2007
This review is from: Managing Morning Sickness: A Survival Guide for Pregnant Women (Paperback)
Miriam Erick is a hero in our household. I have gotten through two pregnancies with severe Hyperemesis. My first pregnancy, I purchased Miriam Erick's first book, "No More Morning Sickness," while I was unable to keep any food down and had IV fluids being administered to me at my home. I was on the IV for one month and had visiting nurses come to check on me a few times per week. I felt incredibly isolated with the disease of Hyperemesis and I didn't know where to turn for support. Miriam's 1st book helped me get through each day.

A few years later, my husband and I decided to plan for another pregnancy. We met with many specialists and even traveled to Boston to meet with Miriam Erick personally. I was then informed of this book, Managing Morning Sickness. I purchased it immediately and read it cover to cover before even conceiving our second child. It was a life saver filled with nutrition information, recipes and meal plans for different cravings (e.g. salty, crunchy, etc.), descriptions of complications from hyperemesis, medications being used and even alternative therapies. This book also talks about triggers for morning sickness, which helped me to try to avoid certain scents & situations. Per Miriam's advice, lemons are a great for trying to prevent nausea. Lemons are not only great for drinking as lemonade, but for sniffing as well. I would carry a fresh lemon wedge around with me whenever I had to go to doctor appointments or any other place with a lot of people. If I started to get nauseous from a particular smell or fragrance, I would sniff my lemon wedge and the nausea would get a little better.

I can't say enough about how Miriam's books helped me get through my pregnancies. Hyperemesis is a life threatening disease if not treated properly and Miriam's knowledge allowed me to ask my medical team the right questions in order to get the treatment that I needed. Thank you Miriam for your wonderful books filled with fabulous knowledge and resources!!!

3.0 out of 5 stars not helpful for HG, June 9, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Managing Morning Sickness: A Survival Guide for Pregnant Women (Paperback)
I didn't personally find this book at all helpful with hyperemesis. I had HG with my first pregnancy and bought this book in preparation for a second go around. I can't imagine anything more useless than recipes and lists of foods to satisfy cravings when it's impossible to keep down even a sip of water. I was really hoping for food advice along the lines of "here is the bare minumum you have to eat and what supplements you have to take to keep from dying of malnutrition", but no luck. Furthermore, her section devoted to HG is just a list of the horrible things which can happen to you due to HG: abortion, acute kidney failure, death, esophageal rupture, etc. Thanks! I feel cheered up already.

This is probably a great book for women with MORNING SICKNESS. Hyperemesis is not morning sickness, and the advice for one is not applicable to the other.

This review is from: Managing Morning Sickness: A Survival Guide for Pregnant Women (Paperback)
I had hyperemesis for my first pregnancy and bought this in preparation for my second pregnancy. I simply do not see how this could help at all with hyperemesis. It definitely wasn't any help to me. It is mainly a book that says, "eat what sounds good," and while that might help with morning sickness, I cannot see it possibly helping when any solid food causes uncontrollable vomiting. I was not able to get any use out of it. I might recommend it to a mother dealing with run-of-the-mill morning sickness, but I would not bother with it for a real case of HG - I would direct the mother to Ashli McCall's book "Beyond Morning Sickness."

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Have, September 16, 2006
This review is from: Managing Morning Sickness: A Survival Guide for Pregnant Women (Paperback)
As a "survivor" of Hyperemisis I can honestly say that this book and the author were invaluable resources to me. Not only did I read the book but was able to be under her care during my second pregnancy. I found the pages of the book to be filled with excellent information, helpful tips, great suggestions on things to try and eat, and comfort that I wasn't alone. Miriam was truly an angel for me and I wouldn't have made it through the pregnancy without her. A must read for any women suffering from morning sickness or more during pregnancy.

2.0 out of 5 stars The pregnant woman I bought it for was not impressed, December 17, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Managing Morning Sickness: A Survival Guide for Pregnant Women (Paperback)
The pregnant woman for whom I bought this book (in her second hyperemetic pregnancy) writes:

"To be perfectly honest, when you have hyperemesis, a book about managing your morning sickness is of no use whatsoever.

With hyperemesis, when you can't even keep water down, recipes won't really help you; they'll just make you sicker. You really have 2 options - take medications or take IV fluids (which they also put medications in)."

----------

My comment: your mileage may vary, and there is a difference between hyperemesis and "just" morning sickness...

This review is from: Managing Morning Sickness: A Survival Guide for Pregnant Women (Paperback)
Miriam Erick is a lifesaver. After suffering with hypermesis, I finally found Miriam, and what a difference! She was so understanding and is a world expert on the topic. She even does phone consultation. The book is full of practical strategies that really work, based on her research with lots of women. If you have HG, don't despair, get this book and call Miriam for help.

5.0 out of 5 stars Miriam is incredible!, September 22, 2006
This review is from: Managing Morning Sickness: A Survival Guide for Pregnant Women (Paperback)
I would not have made it if it wasn't for Miriam. First, she doesn't underestimate how physically miserable you are feeling (as a lot of people do). Second, her scientific understanding of the "disease"/condition process is comforting. Third, all her suggestions on what and how to eat/drink are priceless. And last, but not least, she knows when the condition is severe enough that it needs actual medical intervention (such as intravenous fluids and medication). For those women who are not fortunate to meet her in person while going through this period, reading the book is of great benefit.

5.0 out of 5 stars Managing Morning Sickness, December 29, 2007
This review is from: Managing Morning Sickness: A Survival Guide for Pregnant Women (Paperback)
As a dietitian working with pregnant women, I purchased this book to help me offer suggestions to the women suffering from morning sickness. Although I haven't yet read the book cover to cover, the parts I have read offer practical suggestions for overcoming the nausea. I plan to offer suggestions as well as suggest that women suffering from severe nausea, purchase the book if they are able. I had no idea that there was a dietitian who's practice has focused on this problem.

5.0 out of 5 stars Recipes are awesome...VERY helpful book!, January 8, 2010
This review is from: Managing Morning Sickness: A Survival Guide for Pregnant Women (Paperback)
I bought this book even when my Morning Sickness wasn't 'crippling' -- just MAJORLY uncomfortable... (and yes, day in and day out -- not just in the am!)... her recipes are SUPER easy and I even made a soup on the 1st day! I also used it to help me grocery shop for some anti-nausea staples. Wish they had this book in the OB's waiting room. It would be a MUST-read instd of some of the silly magazines they have! Great nutritional info, and things to do around the house and in your life.

Overall, very thorough book. It's written not like a clinical dissertation, which is refreshing!

Very true -- a SURVIVAL GUIDE for Pregnant Women! :)
