Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

When was the last time you performed routine maintenance on your reference collection? Nolan, head of reference and an associate professor at Trinity University, San Antonio, aims to provide "a fuller picture of the...maintenance activities that are only briefly treated (in standard reference textbooks)" and as a "framework for selection activities." While there are textbooks that briefly touch on the selection and management of reference materials, most notably Bill Katz's Introduction to Reference Work (McGraw, 1996. 7th ed.), no other text focuses on this topic in quite this depth. Nolan neatly and quite efficiently bundles together thoughts on collection fundamentals, collection development policies, selectors, selecting (print/electronic), and maintenance activities. In addition, the annotated bibliography includes a carefully selected list of pertinent further reading. This is required reading for new reference collection managers in all types of libraries; strongly recommended for regular review by veteran managers.AJanet Brewer, Murray State Univ. Lib.,
