Book Description

New Horizons in Management Series April 30, 2006
"Managing Value-Based Organizations" argues that those who fail to understand management history are destined to repeat it. Research has shown that despite the prodigious output of management books, managers still have little idea why there is so much change in the world of work or what they can do about it. Most, it seems, are still waiting for the dust to settle, expecting instead that in the near future they will be able to go back to doing things the way they have always done them.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"'An insightful and enjoyable book. Bruce Hoag and Cary Cooper first provide a concise history of work, organizations and management highlighting what has changed over time and why. Then emphasizing the value-based organization - an organization committed to delivering value to all of its stakeholders - they tackle the "so what" providing practical advice for organizations, managers and employees. It will make you think.' - Ronald J. Burke, York University, Canada"

This review is from: Managing Value-based Organizations: It's Not What You Think (New Horizons in Management Series) (Hardcover)

Hoag and Cooper have done an exceptional job of providing a painstakingly accurate, in-depth study of the organization and management of work and how it continues to evolve and transform with the shifting tides of more modern, technologically advanced times. The book is extraordinarily well researched from cover to cover, offering a thorough history and evaluation of organizational forms and management techniques, in addition to outlining cutting-edge methods and illustrations on how to position an organization for enduring growth.

The insights presented in chapter 10 regarding employability, the value of networks, and continued professional development are particularly noteworthy due to the immediate usefulness and worth they afford to readers of all career backgrounds and levels.

The unbelievable amount of information contained within this book and the clear, captivating way in which the information is communicated make it the perfect resource for anyone, whether they are representative of an organization or themselves as an individual, interested in learning how to move forward and achieve sustained success in the working world.

Well written history of work and management, with a nice balance between European and American perspectives. Systematic and well organized. Practical advice for improving your organization now, and a unique perspective on how to adapt to continuing change in the world of work. This is a fresh new vision for organization and management, with plenty of research to back it up.
