Book Description

0727918702 978-0727918703 May 1, 2006
With accompanying software!

Clinicians manage a lot of data - on assorted bits of paper and in their heads. This book is about better ways to manage and understand large amounts of clinical data. Following on from his ground breaking book, Evaluating the Processes of Neonatal Intensive Care, Joseph Schulman has produced this eminently readable guide to patient data analysis. He demystifies the technical methodology to make this crucial aspect of good clinical practice understandable and usable for all health care workers.

Computer technology has been relatively slow to transform the daily work of health care, the way it has transformed other professions that work with large amounts of data. Each day, we do our work as we did it the day before, even though current technology offers much better ways.

Here are much better ways to document and learn from the daily work of clinical care. Here are the principles of data management and analysis and detailed examples of how to implement them using computer technology.

To show you that the knowledge is scalable and useful, and to get you off to a running start, the book includes a complete point of care database software application tailored to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).

With examples from the NICU and the pediatric ward, this book is aimed specifically at the neonatal and pediatric teams. The accompanying software can be downloaded on to your system or PDA, so that continual record assessment becomes second nature – a skill that will immeasurably improve practice and outcomes for all your patients.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read for all clinicians in modern-day practice, November 1, 2006

This review is from: Managing your Patients' Data in the Neonatal and Pediatric ICU: An Introduction to Databases and Statistical Analysis (Paperback)
Dr. Schulman does a great service in this book, filling a role that has not yet been broached by most clinicians and managers but that is fundamental for the modern practice environment. That is, he addresses core concepts of patient data management and how those data can answer key questions about our daily work and inform our way of practicing. His explanations are clear and easily understandable to people without a background in statistics or data management, and he provides real-world, constructive solutions for the issues he raises (and practical ideas for how to put those solutions into action). Although this book is geared for neonatologists and pediatricians, I can see important applications for all practitioners.

The accompanying CD-ROM is a gem. It contains a full patient information management software application. I have seen first-hand that this tool can improve work effectiveness and efficiency. Dr. Schulman allows the user to modify the software to meet their individual needs, and even walks you through the steps to do that.

This book will change the perspectives of clinicians who find statistics boring or intimidating. It will inspire clinicians to develop new and innovative methods for approaching their daily work. And it will instill more confidence in clinicians to use evidence-based methods and analytical foresight in their practice. The book can truly transform how you think and work. I strongly recommend it.
