A general introduction to the manatee (or sea cow) and its relatives around the world. The primary emphasis is on the Florida manatee--where it lives, what it eats, and how the increasing development of its habitat is endangering its chances for survival. A slightly fictionalized account of one manatee's life dramatizes the manmade dangers the animals face. Sibbald includes a glossary, defining the words highlighted in bold throughout the text, and gives a pronunciation guide. The cover features an underwater photograph of a manatee hanging motionless in water and other full - color photographs of these strange-looking creatures appear on nearly every page. Sibbald focuses her text on this little-known yet remarkable sea mammal, whereas Margaret Goff Clark's The Vanishing Manatee (Dutton, 1990) emphasizes the creature's endangered status and rescue efforts on its behalf. I first recieved a copy of this book as a child, and enjoy going back to read it even now. The text is accesible to children, but written in such a way that it also appeals to adults. The book is informational without being dry. Instead, it offers a lively and interesting glimpse into the world of marine life that all ages will enjoy. Every book in Jean H. Sibbald's series is written with the same informational and passionate approach, and each book contains high quality photos that add faces to the names of the animals children learn about. I highly reccomend her books to anyone looking for an introduction to marine animals, they are perfect for a night in and offer a great opportunity to read to children!
