4.0 out of 5 stars Manatee-Sea Cow ,Gentle Giant of the Sea, July 10, 2000

This review is from: Manatees: Manatee Magic for Kids (Animal Magic for Kids) (Library Binding)
A great read-a-loud about a young girl who wanted to be a mermaid...a beautiful creature that is half woman and half fish. Living in the sea, swimming, taking rides on dolphins and having tea parties with tropical fish. Her brother tells her that his science teacher told his class that the legend is based on a marine mammal called a manatee which looks sort of like a walrus. We learn all sorts of interesting information about this mammal in story form with photographs and colored drawings. It is well written. It is humorous and tender. The Manatees are an endangered species and are protected. They are a distant cousin to the elephant. I loved the way the information is presented. It really keeps your interest. A great book to have for the study of Sea life. It has a Glossary of vocabulary words in the back with the pages the words arefound on. It also has adult-child interaction questions to help young readers to be able to discuss the book. Manatees are very friendly, lovable creatures that rub noses with each other and snuggle together.
