Book Description

November 17, 2000
Today Manchester United is one of the world's richest and most successful sporting organizations, with an aura of invincibility surrounding it. No club in the history of English soccer has ever reached such a position. Yet exactly ten years ago Manchester United was up for sale to a man, who was described as an 'educationalist', for a mere L20 million, and even as late as 1993, United's income was less than that of Tottenham, a club which in the last ten years has seen two changes of ownership, horrendous Boardroom problems leading to court battles, and seven different managers. This is a unique behind-the-scenes look at the modern Manchester United - the circumstances, people, events and controversies that have made Manchester United plc what it is today.

Editorial Reviews

Review

The Sun An explosive book! The Financial Times Bose does an excellent job in interweaving the clubs's history and its remarkable development as a commercial enterprise. Mirror Edwards is furious that a new book, Manchester Unlimited, has quoted him as calling his manager a "troublemaker" and "useless with money". --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

I felt the book was ok. If someone is looking for a book about soccer, how to play or a story about a soccer player this isnt it. But if you are looking to find out how a soccer club works, what goes on behind the tv than this is it. Mihir definately knows what he is talking about and has done an enormous amount of research to write this book. Even though it was well written, I found it to be a little dry at times which I did not find to apealing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Manchester Unlimited, May 12, 2003

I really liked this book because i am a huge soccer fan! It was very informative and i learned a lot about Manchester United and the hardships the team faced. The success of Manchester United did not simply occur because they are a good soccer team. The manner in which they conducted their business and the way in which they were managed helped catapult the team to success. I feel that if a team's business is carefully managed and smart business decisions and ideas are brought forward, then the team will succeed as Manchester United has proven.

4.0 out of 5 stars An interesting read for some., January 16, 2001

This book tells the story of Manchester United, one of the most famous soccer clubs in the world. Much of the book is focused on the last couple years focusing on the BskyB bid to buy Man United and the tries at a "Super League" (especially the Media Partners proposal). The second section of the book is devoted to the history of the club, and, when applicable, English soccer history (e.g., the Heysel Disaster, Tottenham's flotation on the open market, etc.).

I'm not sure this book would be very interesting for, 1) someone who knows a great deal about Man United, or 2) someone who knows nothing about Man United. It was perfect for me since I knew BskyB had bid to buy Man United and that a European "Super League" had been rumored. I think someone familiar with English soccer would know most of this book, and someone completely unfamiliar might struggle with names and such.

Bose does attempt to give an unbiased opinion of Martin Edwards, in case anyone cares.

Overall, I enjoyed the book. Not a literary masterpiece, but filled with information I was curious about and probably would have been hard pressed to find in the U.S.
