Man's work illuminates both the region's beauty and the harsh realities of life there. -- Travel & Leisure, December 1998

About the Author

Wong How Man was born in Hong Kong in 1949 and educated in the United States. After graduating in journalism and art from the University of Wisconsin in 1973, he began a series of journeys into Asia's remote regions and minority areas as an explorer and scholar. Amazed by the changes he has seen over the years, Wong has used his unique photographic skill to capture the rural life and traditions of various ethnic groups before they are lost to posterity. In the 1980s, Wong led six expeditions for National Geographic. His article, 'Peoples of China's Far Provinces', for National Geographic Magazine in March 1984, was nominated for the Overseas Press Club Award of America. In 1985 and 1986, Wong led a ten-month National Geographic expedition, tracing the Yangtze Rivei; which culminated in the discovery of a new source to the river. His book, "Exploring the Yangtze," detailed this expedition, and a CD-ROM of the same title won nine international awards. Another journey to western China and Pakistan yielded the book, Islamic Frontiers of China: Silk Road Images. His latest CD-ROM, "Tibet: Exploring Life on the Plateau" has received international accolades. As a Research Fellow at Academia Sinica's Beijing Institute of Geography and the Yunnan Geographic Institute, as well as other appointments, Wong is well known and respected by his peers in China. In 1987, he established the China Exploration and Research Society (CERS) dedicated to better understanding and preserving the wildlife and cultures of remote China. Wong's projects to protect the endangered Black-necked Crane and to restore Tibetan monasteries have received Honorable Mentions from the Rolex Awards for Enterprise in recent years. His work has been featured in many books and leading magazines, including National Geographic, Ceo, Reader's Digest Archaeologv, Asia Magazine and Architectural Digest. Additionally, CNN and The Discovery Channel regularly feature the work of Wong How Man.

Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1971 Julie Gaw completed undergraduate studies at Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota. Ethnically half Chinese but raised in the USA, she studied Mandarin Chinese to get back to her roots. In 1992, she researched ethnic minorities of Yunnan on a Richter Fellowship and continued Chinese language and culture studies at Nankai University, Tianjin. In 1996, Gaw began work with Wong How Man and his China Exploration and Research Society in Hong Kong. She set up CERS' Nature and Culture Conservation Center in Dunhuang, Gansu province. Her writing has appeared in numerous magazines, including the Far Eastern Economic Review and Newsweek

Francesca von Habsburg is HIRH Archduchess of Austria. She grew up in Switzerland surrounded by one of the most important private art collections in the world. In 1991, she established the ARCH Foundation dedicated to the conservation of the world's cultural heritage and has received several awards for her conservation work

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful coverage of a relatively unknown land., December 16, 1998

This review is from: From Manchuria to Tibet (Hardcover)
This book is the only pictorial book I've encountered that not only depicts life and land in the obscure region between Manchuria and Tibet, but covers it absolutely eloquently. For anyone who is interested in this forgotten territory, this books illuminates the region with gorgeous, striking images and informative text. It is well worth the price.
