There is a good selection of designs, and the print is on both sides of the page. The mandala will come out in much more vibrant colors if you use fine tip markers and color on both sides. The look beautiful in my windows and my only problem is that they don't perforate the edges of the page, so tearing the finished product out of the book is sort of a pain.

Peace, love and crayons!,

Just beautiful Mandalas to color! You have to see these to really appreciate how lovely they are. I recommend that you photo-copy the pages multiple times and experiment with doing them in different ways. Crayons, gel pens, paints, colred pencils -- try them all for different effects. Cut them out and use them in other craft projects. Frame them on interesting natural papers or fabric as a backing.
There's endless inspirational fun to be had here, not to mention the meditation time you gain while working on them. What a way to clear your thoughts, lower your stress and just enjoy a bit of peace!

Great Mandalas,
This review is from: Mandalas Stained Glass Coloring Book (Dover Design Stained Glass Coloring Book) (Paperback)
I did not purchase this book to actually color as stain glass and to display in windows, but that would look nice too. I purchased it to photocopy and color. I don't recommend scanning and printing because you will use up your black ink very quickly. It's cheaper photocopying them elsewhere. When photocopying these ones I tore each page out so that the other pages wouldn't show through the photocopies. The nice thing about photocopying is that you can color the same one ten times and they will all look so different. There are some very cool designs in this book.

Nice but . . .,
This review is from: Mandalas Stained Glass Coloring Book (Dover Design Stained Glass Coloring Book) (Paperback)
These are nice designs. But like all Dover Coloring Books, the designs are printed back to back. So if you use markers to color, like I mostly do, they bleed through and ruin the back design. If you prefer to use pencils to color, then this is a nice book--as are many of the Dover series.

My 6-year-old daughter and I both enjoy coloring these mandalas and hanging them in the windows.

The most important thing you should know about this coloring book of mandalas is that each coloring page has a black background, not white. The areas you color in are translucent, so the colors really show through. Also, each mandala is printed the same on both sides of the page, so that either side you look at, it is the same. I color BOTH sides to make the colors very rich and vibrant. I also take a black marker and deepen the black background. Each mandala is then beautiful enough to frame! One more important thing to know is that the pages are a little more glossy than regular coloring books. The best way to color these pages is with a permanent marker, and make sure you have the fine point markers to use, as some of the places in each mandala to color in are very small and require a fine point so you won't mark out of the lines. I do not think crayons would work well at all, simply because you probably cannot get a fine enough point.
A couple of the mandalas are Chinese in theme, with the yin-yang symbol. There is also one mandala that actually has a bodhisattva (Buddhist deity) on it; not sure if it is the Buddha, or Quan-Yin, but it IS Buddhist in nature, if you are interested. Each mandala is really pretty. There is only one in the whole series I did not like, but otherwise, each is it's own work of art. I can clearly remember owning this very same brand and coloring book back in about 1979 or so---I was just a kid. I remember it because of the black backgrounds and how painstaking I found it to color in as an impatient child. Maybe this is not the best coloring book AT ALL for a child, but for someone older, a teen or adult. I am a 42 year old woman who is disabled recently, and was looking for something relaxing I can do while in recovery. I was thrilled to find Dover still made these coloring books! If you are very crafty, you could cut each mandala out after you've colored it in, and seal it in with a spray-seal or with some kind of laminating sheets, hand each one with an invisible string on some wires, and make a beautiful colored mobile out of these. Or just hang them in a window.

These mandala's are simply breath taking and beautiful- even before you color them. Very pretty, very fun, and very well priced for what you get.

I have been an artist all my life and so when I sat down to color, the relaxation response was automatic. My breathing deepened, my mind wandered and let go of any worries or responsibilities. I had always loved coloring books and paint-by-numbers as a kid because they were a great way to escape (before I became a serious reader).
I love the complexity of these designs! Very intricate and the pages are scored for easy removal from the book. |
