This dictionary would be an outstanding companion to those native English speakers who are actually living in a Chinese-speaking area. For this reason, it's a shame it isn't widely available in China.

What makes it so useful is

*its Intermediate level - not too many rare words cluttering the view, but it
---still provides so much more than you could get from a phrase book.
*its clear type and layout.
*its convenient pocket size with a durable but flexible cover
*its alphabetic Chinese layout.

Yes, the Chinese-English section has all the headwords strictly alphabetized using the standard Pinyin romanization developed in Beijing decades ago and used throughout the People's Republic for road signs, etc. This romanization means that if you can hear a word, you can usually find it quickly without having to resort to finding the radicals used in writing it.

This is only the second such dictionary I've owned that's alphabetized this way. The first was John DeFrancis's excellent ABC dictionary, which also merits five stars in my opinion, is also unavailable in China, and also comes in a pocket edition the same size as Berlitz pocket edition, but thicker. That is, the DeFrancis book has a much larger vocabulary - not always an advantage. It's also Chinese-English only, and not English-Chinese. So its a bit of an overkill for beginners and early intermediates compared to the Berlitz book, which has both English-Chinese and Chinese-English sections.

Just be sure to buy your copy before you come to China.

It has more words than Learner's Chinese dictionary by Li DONG, but less or not at all sentences examples. I prefer Li DONG's book for practicing making sentences.
