About a year ago, I made the decision to write a book about social media marketing—one that fills in some of the blanks. In 8 Mandates for Social Media Marketing Success, I've focused on the personal behavioral traits that can affect your marketing initiatives, and this book details what I consider to be the top eight social media marketing mandates that must be mastered in order to, simply put, get results.

Kent Huffman is an accomplished marketing and customer experience executive. He currently serves as the Chief Marketing Officer at BearCom Wireless and is the founder and Co-Publisher of Social Media Marketing Magazine, a new digital publication written by the leading CMOs, marketing book authors, and marketing professors around the world who are active on social media. Previously, Kent held the positions of Vice President of Marketing at CompuCom Systems, Global Marketing Communications Director at Perot Systems (now Dell Services), and founder of his own boutique marketing consulting firm, Marketek Media. Kent has a bachelor's degree in marketing from Texas State University and is accredited as a Certified Business Communicator (CBC) by the Business Marketing Association. Kent is the co-founder of the CX|M Institute and sits on the Customer Experience Corporate Advisory Board for the CMO Council.

Kent Huffman had me hooked with his fishing analogy in the introduction. You have to fish where the fish are. And to find the fish (potential customers), you have to create great content. That content allows you to establish trust and engage audiences, the key to all marketing. The 8 Mandates provides real-world examples that every marketer will want to read. Five Stars!

Kent Huffman has put together a very simple, but powerful, list of "Mandates" that Marketers would be well-advised to follow. While some of them may sound too simple, like "Start Listening", he gives rich descriptions of what is involved and the case studies do a great job of laying it all out in practice. Many of these stories help get the reader into a deeper state of mind to understand the fundamental change in perspective required to succeed in social media. When you put them all together, it is a reshaping of the typical priorities a tradition marketer may have had. His quotes and examples give you more permission to think differently, and help a reader understand the implications for action. It is a quick read, great to pass around a leadership team, and should get an organization talking.

I love the format of this book. It presents each mandate in a clear and practical way that will help any reader with their own social media campaigns. Each mandate is presented clearly, is followed by supporting comments from thought leaders, and then case studies illustrate the significance of that mandate in practice. Reading this book is bound to improve the way you approach social media.

I always appreciate advice from a guy who has actually done it, versus a guy who merely learned stuff in school (or worse, looked it up online) but has never had skin in the game. Kent Huffman meets that definition, and his book provides solid, practical guidance. It's also told in an engaging way, with lots of real-world examples. Highly recommended.

8 Mandates has real, tactical ideas that any CMO can put into action within his/her own organization. The best practices outlined herein are outstanding. The world of social media is changing fast and CMOs need ideas they can put into motion immediately. Kent's book provides those ideas. Must read!!

I'm impressed with the amount of work it took to pull this book together, from collecting the quotes to organizing the information into a meaningful context. However, there's the risk of either being too general or missing some important points when trying to narrow marketing concepts to a certain number. "8 Mandates" in some ways falls into this category. Liz Miller on page 125 suggests the mandates "are fundamental to broader marketing success." I would take that further to say they are basic to human communication. However, the book captures some of the nuances of what can be an amorphous topic.

This book isn't a good starting point for the newbie social media marketer, since it will be difficult for them to derive meaning and appropriate actions from the quotes -- many restate the same idea in different ways, which can be confusing. It's more appropriate for those who understand social media marketing, or as a companion to more structured and comprehensive books on the topic. The value of listening, relationship building and thought leadership are stressed, yet key concepts essential for developing a successful strategy and companion tactics are missed. For example, where to place social media in the promotional mix, how it varies for specific types of businesses, resource allocation, and impact on search engine results.

The included case studies are a starting point, providing some insight into strategy, but don't provide enough detail to inform the development of plans to the tactical level. They rarely look beyond the majors, like Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube and Twitter, etc., yet social media is integrated into so many sites today. There's gold in those hills.

Then this is your playbook. Don't go back to the boardroom, the C-suite or the budget-planning committee until you've read 8 Mandates for Social Marketing Success.

I just finished reading 8 Mandates - it's a quick read and a truly rich collection of real-world examples of social marketing in action. So many books are theoretical, process driven, one-size-fits-all, generic how-tos. This book takes a completely different approach and is a treasure-trove of practical examples. It showcases so many people who have successfully used social marketing and includes campaign cases, programs and tactics from a diverse group of brands in almost every market sector. I found myself pausing on page after page thinking how smart that campaign was, how clever that marketer was or how amazing the results were.

Many books on this subject - and there are many out there - begin with a burst of energy and then drag along to the finish. But 8 Mandates is a machine gun blast of stories, examples and successes from well-known and not so well-known brands, companies, marketers, thought-leaders and academics experts. I don't believe I've seen such an extensive roster of practitioners in any other book. I particularly enjoyed the way the book is organized, with bite-sized chunks of work from brands like AT&T, IBM, Gatorade, Motorola and many more. These case studies give tangible examples of how the companies tackled social marketing across the eight critical mandates for success.

Regardless of what books you've read, 8 Mandates is a mandatory read right now before you spend another dollar on social marketing.
