Book Description

October 1991 9 and up4 and upMandie Books
Includes A Special Sewing Pattern for an Apron and Bonnet!

After days and days of begging, Amanda Elizabeth Shaw (better known as Mandie) finally convinced Aunt Lou to teach her how to cook. You know who Aunt Lou is Mandie's Uncle John's housekeeper. Mandie not only loved learning how to cook, but she recorded every recipe, every "do" and "don't" that they went through. And that is how this cookbook came to be shared with you.

Mandie also learned how to cook Cherokee-style from Morning Star, Uncle Ned's wife. Sallie, her granddaughter, helped translate since Morning Star doesn't speak English. Being part Cherokee, Mandie wanted to learn how her kinpeople cook.

With Mandie's step-by-step instructions, you can cook and serve meals and share the experiences of girls from the turn-of-the-century. Learn how to bake cakes and pies, do popcorn balls, make biscuits and Southern fried chicken, as well as make Indian recipes like dried apples and potato skins.

If you love the Mandie Books, you'll love to try cooking Mandie's favorite recipes!

More About the Author

Lois began her first Mandie story when she was only eleven years old. But eventually the manuscript was tucked away in a drawer and forgotten. Lois went on to attend Furman University and studied music for several years in New York City where she and her sister sang professionally. Some years ago, Lois was prompted to pull that old manuscript out and began to work on Mandie's story-of her childhood in the South at the turn of the century and her Cherokee heritage. The rest is history and now the MANDIE BOOKS series have sales nearing six million copies! Lois writes from her home in South Carolina. Enthusiastic young fans fill her mailbox with their insightful responses to her stories.

It angers me to see that you would write such a thing. Can't you understand it's for young people and NOT ABOUT THE BOOK! It's about cooking. Fun cooking in my opinion. Get a grip. Whatever made you say those things was totally rude to people who did enjoy the product. It wasn't the best cookbook I admitt. But to totally bash it is insulting the person who wrote it. I say that if you are anywhere from 8-14 years old you will enjoy it. So I say buy it no matter what any one else says to you!

5.0 out of 5 stars A SUPER CHOICE for a Child's First Cookbook, June 22, 2009
This review is from: Mandie's Cookbook (Mandie Books) (Plastic Comb)
When I saw the front cover, I had to pick up this children's cookbook. When I opened it, I fell in love with the inside: the large font headings, the one recipe/page format, and the silhouetted illustrations of those traditional (or pioneer) recipes used by our moms and grandmothers, and the American Indian recipes (Wished there had been more of them). The format would catch any child's eyes and grandma's, too. The recipient of this cookbook was my very young niece who was spending the day with her grandmother. The child busied herself that day perusing the captions and pictures from cover to cover and preparing beverages for her grandpa. At the end of the visit, grandma forgot to pack the cookbook. Oops! But then, a beach trip was planned and the book would not be missed for at least a day. (Now that could be another Mandie mystery: Where is Mattie's missing Mandie Cookbook?)
