Book Description

April 23, 2009
A witch is strangled by a hanged man. A mad dowser tracks demons and monsters. A miller's ghost haunts his mill. A drowned fisherman speaks through the cry of seagulls. A scarecrow stalks its killer. Virgins are sold into slavery. A tournament charge leaves many knights dead and one murdered. A kidnapped girl vanishes into the forest... From Sherwood's Greenwood to the fetid streets of London, Robin Hood and Marian use logic and superstition, muscle and pluck, and fire and steel to track the darkest killers of the Dark Ages. "The atmosphere is vivid, the writing sharp, and the puzzles neatly constructed..." Steven Saylor "Robin and Marian are in good hands." Rick Riordan "Robin and Marian are ideal sleuths and Emery gives them a whole new lease on life." Mike Ashley "Clayton Emery's lively Robin and Marian tales of historical crime, misdeeds and gallivanting are like a breath of fresh air." Maxim Jakubowski

From the Author

The idea came in a flash while I was pondering which murder mystery to write next, and which Robin Hood tale to pursue.  "Why not Robin Hood and Marian as medieval detectives?"  The inspiration was easy, the execution hard, but the story came together from two elements.  I'd read in a "Strange Stories of the Middle Ages" about a dowser who magically tracked a murderer across a city.  Great, but I needed a practical "scientific" reason for the "magical" dowsing - and decided it was an unnoticed and well-trained dog.  The other was how to stage a locked room mystery in the Middle Ages - and came up with beeswax holding the door bar in place until slammed shut.  And lo and behold, Janet Hutchings of Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine bought the story!  And since writers "write what sells", I kept going.  Another fun way to get my favorite hero before the public eye in a fresh new light!

This review is from: Mandrake and Murder: The Robin & Marian Mysteries (Paperback)
I recall reading Clayton Emery's tales of Robin and Marian in EQMM quite a few years ago, and marveling at the daring idea of having the outlaw of Sherwood act as a Medieval sleuth. Unexpectedly it works, and works very well.

My only cavil is that the physical book seems to have been printed from an ebook, and the result looks rather primitive -- which may, I suppose, be fitting for a book with a Medieval sitting.
