Editorial Reviews

Very rocking guitars and organ fuel the propulsive beats on this 1972 album ( Ape Is High; Here Today Gone Tomorrow , and the hit Git It All ). A #56 LP a killer one!

Sadly, few people are aware of the true funk bands of the 70s. Which is a crying shame given the talent most of them had to offer. I discovered Mandrill Is a couple of years ago, and can confidently put this album in my all-time favorites list (alongside other 70s funksters: The Meters, Parliament/Funkadelic, Cymande, Sly and the Family Stone etc etc). From the face-scrunching funk of the opening track "Ape Is High" to the powerful drums and vocals of "Here Today Gone Tomorrow", this album is essential for anyone who loves funk music. If you think funk is exclusive to James Brown, think again.

From the thickly fuzz toned chicken scratch guitar opening the classic "Ape is High", Mandrill gets down. Now, there's a nice bridge with more of that guitar syncopating with the bass, and everybody gets some nice riffs in there, you get some nice Hammond B3 organ action, everybody is working up a sweat, you know what I'm talking about. The killer is how they bring everything to a crescendo. It's raucous, but it's tight, exactly like they used to do back in the days of the big bands like Count Basie (Miles Davis' best fusion band did it with guitarist Pete Cosey on 'Prelude' from the 'Agharta' set). The horns are blasting, the vocals are chanting "HIGH! HIGH! HIGH!", and then when the drummer rolls and the whole band just kicks it down the home stretch, the bass drops down real deep and they just BRING IT ON HOME, BABY! I swear, it's so good you'll just be a quivering mass of mind-melted goo, but it's OK because you'll be laughing and crying tears of joy...then you'll play it again, you'll be like "that sound was incredible, I want to hear that again."

Just got my CD version of Mandrill is and it sounds just as fresh and funky as the day I bought the lp back in the early 70s. This is what truly innovative music is all about! They cover so many styles and do everything with such energy and feeling, yes remember that word? and soul funk groove and rhythm, yep this collection is superb from the first note to the last. I just love Mandrill's ambitious orchestral and horn arrangements, Children of the sun, mini suite for Duke, Wind on horseback type tracks, still waiting for Mini suite for Duke and Wind on horseback to make it onto CD but it will be worth the wait when they finally do appear.

All in all there is no other band that can play and compose such quality songs as Mandrill, oh and did I mention sing! such harmonies!! I always smile!! If you don't know these guys buy this CD!!! Makes EW&F sound like a bunch of pussycats!

Mandrill's music owes far more to bands like Santana,
Electric Flag,Chicago and Jimi Hendrix then classic funk but
it's potent mix of fiery horn rock, funk rhythms, latin percussion
and muscular guitars put "Mandrill Is" in the same league as
as period Santana and Funkadelic, only with better singing and
songwriting chops.Highlites are the hard rock of "Ape Is High",
the fiery latin rock of "Lord Of The Golden Baboon",the Chicago-
like "Central Park" with lovely group harmonizing and the
amazing ballad "I Refus To Smile".Sorely overlooked, this album is
a diverse,well crafted classic masterpiece-period!

I feel young again. Had this on a vinyl record 40 years ago and sounds even better now.

I am fortunate that I grew up during an era that had such great bands like Mandrill, Santana, Isley Bros, and War. When this album came out in 1972, FM radio was just becoming popular. "Mandrill IS" got a lot of airplay in the 70's. They even had an appearance on "Soul Train". This cd is a real keeper. Their latin roots come through loud and clear on "Cohelo". "I Refuse to Smile" is a soulful, heartfelt ballad. "Get it All" still gets your pulse moving rapidily. "Ape is High", well it speaks for itself. If you haven't discovered the genius of Mandrill, now is a good time!!

I had first heard of Mandrill in my early high school years, and

this one, "Mandrill Is," was the very first album (yes, I had it

in vinyl) I had bought by the group when it was brand new in the

stores. From the first track to the very last just got me really

into them. Sadly, I lost the album, and after close to 30 years

I obtained a copy of it in CD, and then the memories of those

past times really came back. After all, this would be a first

for anyone who would like to put Mandrill in their collection.

I give it 5 stars +++++, and maybe then some. Very nice piece.
