5.0 out of 5 stars YES!!! June 2, 2014

I heard "Manfred" first on LP and really appreciated thos big, romantic symphony. When CD came along, I purchased the Muti with Philharmonia.

Mostly, I've found Muti cold and he can be fast and I longed for more "heart" for such a soulful piece of music. Rostopovich is 1'30" longer
in the first movement, but the other movement timings are very close. Rostopovich conducts with much more rubato and emotion however.

The sound is good for EMI, which rarely offers warm, rich tones.

Rostopovich: what an artist! What a human!

5.0 out of 5 stars A winner! February 18, 2014
Format:Audio CD
Slava obviously was totally committed to Tchaikovsky's "eighth" symphony, as it is sometimes called. His late 70s recording is throbbing, echt romantic, and presents Byron's turgid poem in a more favorable light than it probably deserves. Rostropovich's recording, IMO, supersedes Muti's classic performance Tchaikovsky: Manfred Symphony. For anyone who responds to Rostropovich's unabashedly "Russian" approach to Tchaikovsky, I recommend a modest investment in this "Tchaikovsky" traversal from the same period Symphonies 1-6 / Manfred Symphony / Romeo & Juliet. Highly recommended.
