Being that I was looking at 1k tripods, this seems a great value.

I own 3 different tripods by Manfrotto. They all are great, but when working with a 1000 mm telescopic lens on a windy beach the slightest wobble make a picture impossible. This tripod is by far the most non-wobbling of the 3, but also by far the most expensive. The three elements at the bottom of the vertical column prevent it's wobbling. Also good is the very long travel of the vertical column, and it's easy and precise hight adjustment.

This is the new Manfrotto version of the older Bogen 3246. I have used the Bogen 3246 for well over 20 years and its a wonderful tripod for the money. The biggest issue with it is that its just NOT tall enough for anyone over 6' tall unless you extend the center column. And even though this is an excellent quality center column, any extension of it destabilizes the platform badly if you are shooting a long lens or using it in low light outdoors. Heavy shooting will require lots of stooping and lead to a sore back. The Manfrotto 058B Triault will solve all those issues and then some, but at about $100 more price tag too. All in all its still a good buy.

This unit arrived quickly - in two days after it was ordered. When it arrived, I immediately opened the box (it was packaged very well for shipping) and set it up. This is one very well thought-out and constructed piece of equipment. And, it was engineered with features that seem built to last.

I like the way that the feet of the tripod quickly and effortlessly transform from rubber feet to spikes (for uneven, soft ground). I like the way that the adjustable center column works - how secure it is when elevated, and I like the way that the crank handle stows when not being used. I like how securely the legs lock-up when they are extended. In short, there is nothing about this unit that I find flimsy or inadequate. That's important to me because I'm mounting a heavy 7.62x51mm (police) sniper rifle atop this unit, and I need a platform that is both rugged and secure. So, my needs may exceed your own, but this thing (Manfrotto 028B) should therefore meet or exceed your needs for more "conventional" tripod tasks. If that weren't all good enough, the Amazon price for this product was 20% less than the next-best price I found for it elsewhere. Add to that the free shipping Amazon offered for this, and you have an exceptional deal on an exceptional product.

This is a solidly built and sturdy tripod. Not suitable for any portable application, but ideal for studio or field use once it is set up. I use it with the Manfrotto 393 Gimbal Head for long tele-zoom applications. I am pleased with the performance of this tripod.

I've used Bogen/Manfrotto tripods and products for over 30 years and have found them to be of great quality, reliable and affordable.

I purchased this Manfrotto 028B to use as my primary video tripod with several cameras; a Canon 5DII, a 7D, an older Canon AHX1 with rig and a Blackmagic Cinema Camera and rig. When I say "rig" I mean a full cage, 7" LCD monitor, Tascam DR-60D, matte box/shade and Anton-Bauer batter on a Lanparte adapter plate so there's some weight on it. The Blackmagic alone weighs almost 7 pounds and the extra rigging probably brings the package up to around 15-18 pounds. The 028B holds everything quite well in the field or studio and allows me get up high to shoot with ease (I'm 6'4") and the spreader adds to the stability. I use it with a Manfrotto 502 Video Head MVH502AH and it works like a champ! I've also used it when shooting with a heavier Canon 70-200 f/2.8 L series with a 1.4X or 2X multiplier and it's very stable as long as you know how to set it (or any tripod) up to your advantage. I would definitely recommend this model.

If you need to get your video camera up high (like when filming sports or events when you need extra height), this is the tripod to get. Unless you are a giant, you will need to use a step ladder when you use this tripod at its potential height, which is about 8 feet. I use an aluminum 3 step ladder, light to carry around but strong. Just be careful not to crank the middle telescope section beyond its full height (do not overcrank) or it may come off. Only other thing, mine took a month to arrive from Amazon so check shipping delivery times before ordering. If in a hurry, you may need to shop elsewhere. This is a great tripod for the price, very sturdy but not heavy to carry around, especially if you get a padded bag for it (see my other review on Amazon for the AW 3281BLK Tripod Bag).
