Product Description

Built on the same ergonomically improved design as the 055XPROB, but without the horizontal center column feature, the 055XB is lighter in weight and slightly more compact. The ergonomics of the leg angle release mechanism and the quick action leg locks themselves have also been greatly improved. The leg angle presets allow the camera to reach all intermediate heights from min-max extension.

Anyway, 055XB should be a very good tripod.
Chun Li
Both the legs and the head do not have any bubble levels so I might as well be using a cheaper tripod.

If you think you can find a better one cheaper, best of luck to you.

don't have much to compare this to, except for a $30 sunpak tripod I got from best buy. This guy's expensive, especially since the head is separate, but I love this thing. It's moderate in weight (we'll see if I have to carry it far, but feels very solid. The latches are convenient, I prefer them to knobs -- we'll have to see if they remain the same tightness over time.

The vertical mount is very easy to adjust (compared to my cheapo tripod that I had to CRANK to adjust). The whole unit can get quite tall, and quite low. The default setup is a convenient height.

I love the Manfrotto 222 Joystick head I got with it -- the whole unit together feels amazingly solid!

Pricey (not by photography standards (it's not too expensive), just by normal human being standards), but cool.

Added on 10/21/2007: I posted the review below under the product 055XPROB (and it got 5 helpful votes), but amazon mistakenly moved it to 055XB (and since then it got 2 unhelpful votes). Anyway, 055XB should be a very good tripod. But I encourage you to compare it with 055XPROB, which is just a little more expensive.

Original review: It is a great, sturdy tripod. The only down side is it is a little heavy. But this is what you pay for being sturdy. Bogen/Manfrotto has changed the SKU# from 3021BPRO to 055XPROB. Look at the glowing reviews on the 3021BPRO to convince yourself.

This tripod legs are great: sturdy, versitile and very steady; but please note that for a $ 10.00 more the 055XB Classic can be 055XPROB you can pull out the center post to slide into a horizontal position, but even without the tripod legs works great as should be. It's a little heavier and has plastic parts that I would like to be more stronger and not plastic.

Unless you want to spend a lot more on a tripod, you can't go wrong with this base from Manfrotto. I got the 460MG-3D head to go with it making this a heavy, solid, strong tripod that holds my Nikon D200 with my longest lens (300mm zoom) with ease. I've been using a cheap lightweight tripod for years. Why didn't I get this sooner?

I got the manfrotto 055xb & 128RC with a Sony Video camera I bought 2nd hand. The tripod looks new, its very solid and the clips make it easy to adjust.... accept, I find it difficult almost impossible to get level. The 128RC head ordinary perhaps good for a slider but there's the QR system to consider. Both the legs and the head do not have any bubble levels so I might as well be using a cheaper tripod. Made very well but if levelling is your concern look for something better. This is my first experience with a tripod and straight away I want better.

This is not a good tripod for video. Ok cheapie for stills.

I now know that bowl is far better for video and ball is better for stills, flat head/tripods are limiting.

I've had the 'Manfrotto 055XB Classic Tripod' for some years now and have always been satisfied with it's utility. It's a solidly built tripod of just the right height, for me, and the, easily adjustable, leg latches have never failed to hold steady.

When I decided to take photography seriously this was my first tripod purchase and I've been using it with my 5d mkII and a variety of lenses, which together are heavy. Other reviewers have commented on the lack of a bubble, for leveling, but, even now, I don't see that as a drawback in the least. And up until now it's performed as I've needed.

However It's only recently that I've been traveling with it, and, when hiking, it's weight does become noticeable. It will remain in my arsenal but I'm now looking for a sturdy but lighter tripod.

That shipping speed was ridiculously fast for all the way to new zealand! Outstanding!
Product is wicked, when you clamp down a leg or the centre pole it is not going ANYWHERE!

This is a good, solid high end tripod that will keep your large lens camera or spotting scope good and stable for long range viewing.
