This goes for all the Manfrotto spigot adapters:

I have bought a handful of these over the years and always find uses for them. They're like essential building blocks when solving new lighting and shooting challenges. While I wish the material was a little tougher, I think these are a great balance between durability and cost. Many harder threaded materials will tend to gall when tightened, or will damage mating parts. More expensive materials solve the problem but can easily triple the cost or more.

The main drawback is that you can easily gouge these suckers if you need to crank down on them. This is why I try to keep several at hand. But it's the same material that makes these attractive - they don't gall or stick unless you are using too much force.

There really are no good substitutes for general use, though. If you need harder materials, plan on committing that part for a long time (or use teflon powder to prevent sticking) and use stainless steel. If you have very light duty, you can save a little and get the aluminum version (get machined - avoid the cast or stamped ones that have burs on the seams).

If you don't want to bother with different types, just stick with machined brass and you'll be set. Chances are they will take enough abuse to justify throwing away damaged ones every couple of years.

I have a drawer of brass and steel spigots to solve little problems that always seem to come up during a shoot. Sometimes I end up stacking several adapters to make it work. This particular item is a brass spigot with female 1/4" and 3/8" threads. It's perfect for adapting a tripod for umbrella bracket use or adding a 5/8" baby pin to a Super Clamp. The flat sides are less prone to rotation so you gear stays put. All in all an essential tool that gets used every week many times.

I bought two of these super awesome metal studs for my light stands to adapt them for use with my Alien Bees. Shipped fast and just as described. They're metal, round and shiny, so they got that going for them... which is nice. They're also a lot cheaper than Manfrotto's brass versions but not on the same quality level as the Manfrotto's are machined brass and resist scarring and don't often get stuck when screwed too tight, and don't we all wish we had that feature.

PROS: Great value, good enough for government work
CONS: Do not place in body orifices

The perfect stud. After buying other studs I finally found one that works well. Other studs are completely round. The Manfrotto Stud has one side that is flat. Allowing your screws to bite and not let go like the round version in the market. For that reason alone I give it five stars.

Great price for Manfrotto spigots---these go on light stands, tripods, magic arms, and other things to allow easy connection or support of lights, umbrella holders, flash holders, and other things. Its such a great idea and so easy to use.

Provides solid mounting point for 5/8" baby pin accessories like lights. Relatively soft brass material and milled flat allows steel screws commonly used on accessories to get a little bite and keep them from rotating on the pin.

This was purchased to replace a spigot that I had lost, This Spigot has a flat side which prevents your modifiers from spinning which is a huge plus ! Cant beat the price, and you should always have a couple around the studio.

This is a good quality Monfrotto light stand attachment. I used it for some low cost clamps I bought at the hardware store. I mounted these to the clamps to become little light stands for my Speedlights.
