5.0 out of 5 stars Nice tilt head
It's rated to 5.5 lbs, and handles my 70-200 + 40D without slipping. It's well made - the photo on Amazon does it little credit, so I'm uploading some of my own. It's also larger than it looks.

It's exactly what it purports to be - a tilt head.

3.0 out of 5 stars Pretty Basic but with Potential
I got this unit as part of a monopod kit that I purchased a few years ago. It is pretty well built but the functionality is pretty basic. I have not been using it for sometime because it was a pain screwing it in and taking it off the camera. I wish I had a 234RC instead because of the Quick Release plate.

Well what do you know, Manfrotto has a Quick Release...

4.0 out of 5 stars Manfrotto 234 head, January 18, 2009

I was thinking I should have ordered the Manfrotto head that had the locking plate but after getting this head I realized that I would be just fine without the locking head design. It seems to hold the camera well and although I have the 70-300 lens it seems to hold it in place just fine without drooping. I like it and would say it's okay for general use.

This was the right head for a monopod (I use a Manfrotto 680B). I can swivel the Tilt head and camera vertically - and since the monopod itself can easily turn left or right, I did not need horizontal swivel capability in the head. And it is compact, reasonably priced and sturdy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Monopod Head, February 19, 2009

After fussing with a ball head on my Manfrotto monopod, I decided to use something simpler. This head works great with a small DSLR (I have a Nikon D700), but I'd worry about using it with a full sized pro model.

Made my monopod that much better. I did modify this by replacing the standard clamp with an arca-swiss compatible clamp. Makes it that much better.

3.0 out of 5 stars Pretty Basic but with Potential, March 3, 2010

I got this unit as part of a monopod kit that I purchased a few years ago. It is pretty well built but the functionality is pretty basic. I have not been using it for sometime because it was a pain screwing it in and taking it off the camera. I wish I had a 234RC instead because of the Quick Release plate.

Well what do you know, Manfrotto has a Quick Release Adapter (323RC2) that you can mount on top of it (See pictures I uploaded). I have been using it more recently because I can switch the camera quickly from the tripod (488RC2 mounted) to the monopod (234 + 323RC2 mounted) since both uses the same base plate.

If you are in the market for a "basic tilt head", I would suggest getting the 234RC. If you already have this item and want to upgrade it, get the 323RC2 adapter.

4.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for what I need, just a bit heavy, July 6, 2009

I bought this to use on my monopod/trekking pole for photography while hiking. It is very solidly built. The camera is quite secure on the padded plate when the screw is tight. The tilt action is very quick with a small spin of the twist knob, but becomes totally secure once locked down.

The only downside is that it's a bit heavy. It weighs in at 8oz (1/2 lb).

5.0 out of 5 stars This is the best option for a compact mono-pod top, August 16, 2011

This is the best head for mounting on a mono-pod. It can quickly be adjusted from side-to-side to front-to-back tilt.

I use it for shooting both vertical and horizontal shots on the fly. Then for macro work I switch it to front-to-back tilt to allow me to pose little things quickly out-of-doors.

I've had this head on three mono-pods so far in the past 15 years - it's still the best. Far sturdier and less parts to go awry over a ball head. This one permits a full tension adjustment wheel beneath the platform. This means I can adjust the tension precisely into the tripod sockets of lightly built cameras.

This is well built and heavy duty enough for my Canon 5D MKII with an EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS USM Lens. I mounted a quick disconnect plate on it for the lens foot mount and even though this is kind of a heavy camera lens combination the camera is well balanced at the lens foot and this tilt head holds it fine.

Recently went back to correct poor choices. This was one of them.

This Tilt Head works ok but twisting that little screw up into your camera is a lot more trouble than getting the quick release version for a few dollars more. Additionally in my opinion there is a greater risk of dropping your camera while trying to engage the threads on this head.

With just little practice using the quick release version, Manfrotto 234RC, also allows you to leave the mounting place on the bottom of your camera so you can do a quick connect on your tripod by Manfrotto.

I would give you mine 234 if I could. It is of no use now that I have the "RC" connection of both my tripods and monopod. Do not know why this accessory is suggested with all the Manfrotto monopods. Guess they get to sell two heads when new owners switch over to the quick release.
