Manfrotto has taken the 3001PRO tripod and made it even more versatile! The main refinement to this series is with the center column. Designed as an alternative to the low-angle adapter, the center column enables the head to be left mounted to the column when switching between low angle and normal shooting. The top section is detached without tools by simply unscrewing the knob at the bottom of the column. Good news for existing 3001PRO users is that an 190TSB upgrade column is also available.

As with the previous series, the 3001PRO has a removable center column that doubles as a horizontal lateral arm. Not only does this allow the camera to be offset from leg position, but it provides the simplest way possible to shoot from directly overhead.

In addition, the 3001PRO also comes with leg warmers on two legs which helps keep hands protected in cold weather and protects the body when carrying the tripod on shoulders. A strap, the 458HL, (available as an optional accessory) has also been introduced to better carry the tripod. It simply snaps to the center column.

The ability to convert the center column into a horizontal lateral arm, providing a simple way to shoot from directly overhead, was the most important reason for my purchase.

The "rapid-action" lever locks allow quick (and independent) leg height adjustments and lockdown. In addition, I found the 4 leg-angle settings to be very useful. It weights just over 4 pounds (not the 5 pounds listed).

I use a Manfrotto 700RC2 Mini Video Head for most of my digital camera work. I also added a Manfrotto 484 mini ball head for times when quick readjustments are needed.

Overall, it is a smooth and sturdy (for the weight and price) tripod that is a joy to work with all day long. Note, I've only used it in the studio, but it seems well suited to light fieldwork.

Very pleased with the tripod. Built solid and extremely stable. I like the quick release lever for the legs. Makes it easy for quick setup and take down.

Had been looking at the 714 and 721, but when the 3001 went on sale I went ahead and purchased it. Probable a lot more tripod than I need, but I figure with the future purchase of a larger digital it'll be just right.
