The construction is very good.

The mount makes a very secure click and then you push the lever forward a little and it's locked in tight.

This is a review for anyone interested in using this quick release plate with a Glidecam. When I initially purchased it for my Glidecam HD 2000, I was worried that the base of this adapter may not properly attach to the Glidecam plate. But it fits beautifully.

I have uploaded some pics showing the 394 RC4 adapter plate on a Glidecam along with a Canon 5D.

Attaching the camera to the adapter is a breeze and it snaps in very easily. But removing it is not smooth, and it requires that you apply a fair amount of pressure on the safety latch before you can turn it. Not a big issue, since this means there is no risk of me accidentally moving the safety latch.

Also, if you are using a 5D Mark II, you WILL NOT need to remove the plate that attaches to the camera to remove the battery.

I use this system throughout my entire photography systems. Nikon D700, F6, FE & FE2, u name it. Long telephotos, lighting systems tripods, monopods etc. This system works on everything I have and that is a-plenty. If you are a Photog and have lots of equipment, you know that the fewer systems parts and adapters the better. I could or would not be without this sturdy, well built quality system. All their heads are great also. Folks, you can't go wrong with anything from Manfrotto, costly yes but the quality and design can not be beaten. Like my mentor Ken Rockwell said: "Just go get it and be happy!!" So, get it and be happy! You only get one shot at life and one shot for the greatest of pictures..., do not miss out!!

Respectfully,

Kent M. Whitney

I have used manfrotto's RC2 system for a while and just switched over to the 394 (not the one in the picture - that's the older model - the current one has a lock for a secure connection and release). The locking mechanism itself is sturdy and does require attention to unlock the base. Although I think it's a good thing to minimize accidental disconnects, it can be harder to use than the RC2 mechanism.

The 394 is expensize - that's why I only gave it 4 stars but it does a great job for what it's designed to do.

Pros include a Large base that minimizes camera movement; secure locking base (even though it can be more difficult to use than other models; Two screws for 1/4" and 3/8" connectors; two tapped holes, one for a 1/4" and the other a 3/8" size screw (useful for attaching to a head without a 394 base); and a bubble level to help adjust camera position.

Cons include cost - they should have been priced $10 less; not a major flaw, but the included screws can only be partially tightened by hand. They need a flat blade screw driver to set firmly or loosen once set firmly (the RC2's screw didn't require a tool).

All in all, a very good product that does exactly what it's supposed to do.

Tried many other products, including Manfrotto.. the longer slide-in version, but that became a hassle and it was way too heavy, kinda kluge unit. Hesitent to buy another Manfrotto product, but got this set to find out if the quality is better. This unit is far better than other Manfrotto QR setup. Works everytime and SECURE! No way this unit can come lose and hit the floor.

I like the fast click-ON and click-OFF method to change it fast.
When you do Gun-n-Run shooting ya can't fool with sliding QR assembly. I converted all my vid-cams and DSLR to this unit and never looked back.

Buy one and give it a shot... see if this is what you need.
Wish the price would be less, kinda pricy for a Chinese or Italian product.

UPDATE:
This unit will be used in one of our product because it is so well designed. Our product will be a Video cam-stabilizer platform of a different kind.
You have not seen anything like that, three years in the making and testing in the real-world.
Manfrotto was chosen as the best QR system by us after testing everything on the market for a reasonable price.

I bought 4 of these for my 7D and various things I mount it to. I used the Bogen Hex plates for years and never really been crazy about them, these plates mount easier and I definitely prefer them. Well made and solid and I've not experienced any difficulties with the 4 I bought (easy mount and dismount).

First off this is a solid piece that will hold my 5d Mark III securely with no wiggle. It is also a perfect quick release for glidecams as well as the lever is unobtrusive.

Here is how the lever works:

You first pull the lever back towards you before pressing in the chrome button. The lever will move about 1/2" to an 1". After that first little movement continue to pull back towards you, NOW press in the chrome button at the end of the lever to fully release the plate.

Trying to push the button at the beginning somehow makes it stick (which I was trying to do at first) and is stressful that you might think it doesn't work or is unreliable for fast exchange of gear. But now it works flawlessly following those steps of course.. =)

I have purchased a bunch of these.
I love these because they lock tight & are very secure.
I have these on every piece of equipment so I can easily exchange the camera from steadicam to tripod to monopod to whatever else.
