Sure $50+ is a bit pricey but somehow I just can't feel insulted by this thing. It feels sturdy enough to mount a small car on and in a pinch I think I could kill a mugger with it. All the machining is simply perfect and the finish looks great.

I would love it more at $35, but even so if you need it then get it.

p.s. It takes the weight of a Zoom H4N with ease.

Bought one of these adapters to mount a H4N to a Canon 7D, this thing is amazing. Trust me. I purchased a $20 off-brand mount before this one and I had to send it back because it was faulty. (Yeah I tried to save a few bucks, but this got me thinking: "Do I really want to cut corners on the mount adapter I buy when I am going to be putting it on an expensive DSLR and audio device?") So I decided to purchase the more expensive Manfrotto Hot Shoe adapter. Another reviewer said it felt like this mount was strong enough to mount a car on, and he wasn't lying, it is tough!

Don't fret the price and try to get something cheaper, great film requires great equipment.

Excellent quality ball head. The screw plate on the hot shoe mount is very sturdy and feels solid. It attaches very securely. The ball head meets the expected excellence from Manfrotto. The ball head does have a panning motion that is controlled by the same friction knob as the ball. This is a nice feature that goes beyond the functionality of their similar tripod ball heads such as the also excellent Manfrotto 496RC2. It would be better if it had a separate panning friction knob like the Manfrotto 498RC2, but for the price this is not expected. As long as you don't have a very off-center weight item attached to the ball head, you should be able to pan smoothly. If loosening the ball head lets the item attached sag or move then it will be hard to pan with this because you have to loosen the ball head to get it to move.

I'm using it to hold a Zoom H4n on top of my Canon 7D and it works just as expected with no other equipment or adapters needed. The Zoom H4n securely screws onto the ball head using its threaded mount on the back. It has enough clearance on the 7D to go nearly vertical.

Overall I'm very impressed with the value of this ball head. I'm so glad I found this before buying one of the cheaper versions. Manfrotto rocks.

I needed something a bit heavier duty to mount my 7" Lilliput monitor to the hot shoe of my C100, and the cheap 15 dollar one I was using kept loosening up, and would just not stay.
Yes, this is a bit pricey, but it works perfect. It is heavy duty, feels professionally made, and most importantly locks down easily and keeps my monitor where I want it.
