perfect for amateur photography,

I bought it to use in conjunction with the canon sx30. It has worked flawless to this point. This is the first tripod I have ever owned, and I am entirely pleased with it! With the SX30, it holds it perfectly steady. I often let the bottom section of the legs unfolded, and simply extend the head post. It helps the sturdiness (as long as it is still tall enough). The only thing I don't really care for is the swivel head. If you do any kind of video, this one would not work the best. For me, it seems like it's either tight, or completely loose. But for photography, I couldn't be any happier!

Manfrotto - too much hype,

Everyone raves about Manfrotto tripods. It may be a king of all tripods in the high-end market but this is not really one of them! I tried both pistol grip version and the screw version of ball head. My review is based on mounting Canon 60D with 18-200mm lens and Nikon D5100 with 18-200mm lens. Both are too heavy for this tripod to keep it steady with out sagging. Both my camera and lens were under the weight limit (1.5kg)Pistol grip version was better than the screw version. But, still it was a pain to fix the camera at the exact position you want in a 200MM zoom lens. The pistol grip also comes on your way when you try to look thur the viewfinder while using a DSLR. Screw version of tripod is JUNK! You can get the Dolica Proline for much cheaper and it works much better than this one. The screw you need to keep turning and turning and turning. And when you done turning you realize your composition has shifted....so do it again. This is such a pain in the behind! The (only) good thing I see in this is its compact size and lightweight. May work just fine for compact video camer and point and shoot digital cameras. If you have DSLR, stay away from this.

Got this for a cross country roadtrip. I wanted something tall enough that I didn't have to bend down to look through the viewfinder (I'm 6'3"), but small enough to fit in a carry-on suitcase. This unit packs down incredibly small. Great build quality, light weight and pretty stable for its size. My only complaint is that the ball head isn't great for use with an SLR. After tightening the ball, the camera usually droops a bit due to the weight of the lens. Perhaps the Manfrotto MKC3-H02 Compact Photo-Movie Kit (Grey) with its 2-way head would have been a better choice (though it would add a bit of size to the package).
