4.0 out of 5 stars Good value!, September 6, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Manga Secrets (Paperback)
This is a very underrated title in Manga drawing, and I don't know why. I bought the book for my cousin, but of course, I just *happened* to take a wee look inside. This book covers a lot more than other books--not only how to draw basic figures, but with focuses on hands, feet, ears--all the big bugbears of beginning artists! She also gives a great two page spread of facial expressions applicable to many genres of manga--from the serious/emotional to the goofy! She clearly knows a great deal about manga, from the typical characters to common storylines, and is an accomplished artist.

She emphasizes two things many other books don't: one, get your own style. Her own style on the cover is less stereotypical anime than some people might like, but it's not the same old cookie cutter wanna-be CLAMP stuff. Second, concentrate on telling good stories! Pretty drawings and great character illustrations aren't 'what it's all about' to her.

She even covers how to lay out different kinds of pages--action, dialogue, etc. Her approach *is* geared a bit more to shojo manga, but as an all-in-one reference that encourages you to do more than trace or try to copy their pictures, this is a great value!

5.0 out of 5 stars For manga fans of all ages, June 17, 2005
This review is from: Manga Secrets (Paperback)
I bought this book for myself, but my daughter and her friends love it, too. Very clean, clear instructions on how to create manga characters and elements, with fantastic examples from the artist/author's own body of work.
