This is a "VH1 Behind-the-Music"-type fiction about a troubled young loner and gifted guitarist named Frederick, who more or less drifts into a rock band that ends up touring Japan for a year. Two bands, actually; after a blowup with the lead singer in Band #1, our hero ends up in a (slightly) more stable band of American rockers, called Mangled Noize. They go from gig to gig in their extended foreign tour, encountering sex, drugs and typhoons(!) They end up on a cruise ship, headed back to the U.S. where, hopefully, fame (and groupies) await!

There really isn't much more to the story. When I started reading, I didn't understand that this was the first book in a trilogy, and it didn't seem that this particular story was building toward a climax of any kind. But what held my interest, and kept me turning the pages, was the sheer beer-and-sweat authentic vibe to the writing. I know next to nothing about the backstage day-to-day life of traveling musicians, but somehow this felt real. Didn't know if the author had walked the walk, but wasn't surprised when I read the last page's "About the Author" and learned that sure enough, Mr. Williams had "joined his first band at the age of 11." I'd say this compares favorably to ALMOST FAMOUS, Cameron Crowe's autobiography of life on the road with a rock band in the 1970s.

It's all here: the roadies, managers, hangers-on, groupies, fans, the band bus, in-fighting and jealousies among band members, etc. All against a sexy exotic locale. And most importantly, the MUSIC. The love of it is what drives Fredrick and his bandmates. Hard to say whether Mangled Noize has what it takes to make it big back in America, but it will be interesting to follow their journey in future books.

Since there really isn't much in the way of a description here above, I guess I'll start with that.

Mangled Noize is the first installment in a series of (so far) three books. It revolves around Frederick and his mischief friends who come together and form a band called.. surprisingly.. Mangled Noize :) Although the very beginning is a bit of a back-story on Fred, most of the book is focused on the life of music, touring, drugs and alcohol, horizontal mambo and all the rest of the good life of the Rock 'n' Roll world. And it entirely this story that kept me going and wanting to read more.

At roughly 270 pages, it was a quick read, but a very strange one. I don't know what it is, but Williams' writing style bothers me quite a lot. It is very disjointed.. childish even. The storyline never really flows, but is rather just an endless string of individual sentences that don't quite connect with each other. The overall impression of the book (although it is far from being that bad) is that every single sentence starts with "-Name- does this..." "Then -Name- does that..." and so forth.
Some might say that is to be expected from a first-time effort, but perhaps he could simply do with a writing class or two.

The major plus, as I say, is the story behind the writing, and the music therein. I love music and the story is good, and I think I'll want to buy the other two books as well. Perhaps the writing will improve before it's all finished :)

As my title states, this book was a surprisingly good read. The characters are what kept me going! Wanting to know what kind of situations they would get into. The story was fun and exciting! It seemed to drag at some points but that did not affect the story. A really great plot! Wish the story would of kept on going. Will be looking forward to more work from this author!

I'm going to buy the print version. I'm half way through and can't put it down but I only have it on Kindle and I don't have a lap top. I'm going to have to buy the print version so I can continue reading in bed.

Great character's, great story.

"Mangled Noize" told the adventures of a problem adult-teenager cast out of a dysfunctional family, and how he survived by teaming up with other musically talented young men who also had unfortunate backgrounds. The Rock Band they formed toured the world as they became loyal "brothers" in meeting adversity and success. Captivating, interesting, fun to read! Scenery on the "Mangled Noize" road went by quickly!
