This review is from: Manha de Carnaval (Audio CD)
Norman Simmons comes across with another great CD.He is yet another of those who so deserve greater recognition for a 30+ long career of superb sideman and leader duties on the 88's.With more than able support of Lisle Atkinson on Bass,Paul Humphrey on Drums Simmoons tastefully runs through:
1)Please Send Me Someone To Love 2)Melancholy Baby 3)Stella By Starlight 4) Caravan 5) Soft Winds 6) How Do You Keep The Music Playing 7. Manha De Carnaval (Recardo Bossa Nova). Simmons plays with souch a deft touch in the Bud idiom reminding me of the taste and style of Tommy Flangan among other but with his own personality. It is not as Latin-tinged as you might expect and goes nicely from up tempo to ballad form beautifully. And as a mark of a great musician who has great talent on hand Simmons is generous and space with his sideman. The last tune has some beautiful arco bass playing that kicks it off.If one thing I could have sked for would have been the inclusion of a good percissionist to add to tha latin theme. This is like many of the Simmons LP and CD's.Smart.intriguing and wanting more than one play i.e you'll pull it out again and again.Maybe not 5 star and yes expensive it's worth every penny. Chazz P.S. as always go to [.........] see what they do,kick in and pass the mesage arround. These jazz men and woman known and no so gave themselves to an art that is between 1.5 and 3% of music sales and they help those aren't the superstars with basic needs. Peace
