This is a handsomely produced series, well directed with a generally fine cast. So what is my problem? ITS ALL MADE UP! Not mostly made up. Every important element is a writer's invention. Even the producers state that it is not intended to be historically accurate. Yeah, so what? The so what is that, based on the reviews and extrapolating to the overall viewership, a great many people do not seem to get that. They think they are watching a lightly fictionalized version of real events. Nope. It is a complete fiction masquerading under a real name and lightly sprinkled with a version of real events. Twentith-first century attitudes and beliefs are transplanted to the 1940s.

They also mixup fictional with real characters all of whom are portrayed to reflect plot demands, not what actually happened. Robert Oppenheimer ( a great scientist and able administrator) is presented here as a space cadet, full of obscure mumbling. This is OK since most of the science in the show is also reduced to obscure mumbling. There is a PhD botanist that doesn't know the difference between maize and sweet corn, a physicist that doesn't know how to find north. There are several references to things that didn't exist in 1943 (e.g. INTERPOL). The GIs in the series are all portrayed as idiots and martinets, not to mention weak and inept. Except for the women soldiers who, per episode five and beyond, are mostly prostitutes. The writers are so in love with this last idea that it becomes a sub theme. The "Army women" are "all whores." Nice touch guys. They aren't the only ones.

There is no excuse for this, it is mostly just lazy writing. The nation is full of people that actually know about these things and would be thrilled to provide advice. Most of them would probably do it for free.

This is a very entertaining series if you watch it only for the entertainment aspect only. I lived in and around Los Alamos for 48 years and worked there for 24 years so I was always trying to learn as much as I could about the Manhattan Project. This show is accurate in many details but also takes a great deal of dramatic license in many other details. One large detail is the scenery. They make Los Alamos look like it is in the desert. Los Alamos sits on mesa's in the Jemez mountains at around 7400 feet in elevation, in a beautiful ponderosa pine and aspen forest above the desert. This is a little pet peeve of mine because so many people are so misinformed about New Mexico, they think it is all desert...If they even know New Mexico exists. Also, I am waiting to see where they decide to locate Trinity Site. Movies before it locate it about a 2 hour drive from Los Alamos. It is actually much much farther even now. Back then it was probably a full days drive at least.

I was intrigued when I first heard of this series. I anticipated a (fictionalized) story that would capitalize on the epic events of the last century pitting some of the world's greatest intellects against each other in a competition marked with dire urgency - the making of the atomic bomb to end one of the bloodiest of all wars. I do not get WGN so I paid for the first episode. It continued to pique my interest, so I purchased a season pass. My verdict? It is a disappointing soap opera. When the scientists are not fighting among themselves (how did they ever succeed with so little cooperation?), they are satisfying their varied sexual appetites. In the short span of 8 weeks they have covered marital sex, unfaithful sex, homosexuality (both male and female), and "flashing" as a probable precursor to pre-marital sex of the statutory rape variety. So far they have not touched upon incest and beastiality, but the season is still young. I've cancelled my season pass. Too bad. The writers' "formulaic" approach (i.e., sex, sex and more sex) completely misses the wonderful opportunity to create a fascinating story with an historically important backdrop (and, frankly, is a little insulting to what I would think would be its target audience).

This show is a fun show to watch in fact it is better than most shows I have seen recently. The problem is the creators seemed to have missed an incredible opportunity. This show had the potential to be up there with Band Of Brothers, arguably the best portrayal of ww2 ever. If the writers and producers would have stuck to actual historical events instead of just writing a drama that is set in los Alamos during the Manhattan project they could have won countless Emmys. The cast is absolutely wonderful and the acting is even better. I really don't understand why it isn't more historically accurate. I would have preferred to give this show 2 1/2 stars but I do not have that option. I have watched 5 episodes so far, and I plan on finishing the season however if there is a second season I doubt I will watch.

First few episodes were great (4.5 stars)...it drew you in and I'm not at all a history buff. But then "Manhattan" turned into "Dallas" (which I watch and expect to be soapy/sexy). Was hoping this show would be smarter.

The characters and history of the real Manhattan Project's work at Los Alamos are difficult to top with fictional characters and a synthesized plot. The docudrama "Day One" and the documentary "The Day after Trinity" are much better in portraying the characters and sticking to the real story which is about as exciting as it can get.
