a must have for the Raymond Scott completist, August 13, 2003
This review is from: Manhattan Minuet (Audio CD)
Thanks to the Beau Hunks, they have brought us more Raymond Scott tunes that have not yet been released on CD. As a result, I recommend this CD with no reservations and thank them for the continued excellence in their work. Execution is very nice and the recording comes across with a very personal touch. Well done!

MANHATTAN MINUET FIRST RATE RAYMOND SCOTT!, July 12, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Manhattan Minuet (Audio CD)
These wonderful literal reproductions of Raymond Scott's unique music are played to perfection by the Dutch musicians, THE BEAU HUNKS. Raymond Scott himself would have been honored by this faithful rendering of 14 of his compositions, several of which are receiving their first recording ever. The written introduction by Elvis Costello offers much insight into how a modern musician sees Scott's work. This CD is a keeper and belongs in the collection of any serious music lover.

I liked the other CD's that were done by the Beau Hunks, so I bought "Manhattan Minuet". The tunes written by Raymond Scott are catchy and happy to listen to.

Raymond Scott is a genius..., September 27, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Manhattan Minuet (Audio CD)
Correction on the last reviewer; this recording was made using ANALOG equipment! Not to mention old-school microphones; that's how they achieved that nice "warm" sound. (check out the liner notes to this cd, as well as "celebration on the planet mars") Scott's original recordings were made prior to the widespread use of magnetic tape, which is the true key to high fidelity. That having been said, the Beau Hunks recordings are essential listening, especially for any Raymond Scott fan, however they must be seen as a supplement to the original RSQ recordings; after listening to those, you you will truly appreciate what these Dutch boys have done!

Dinner Music for a Pack of Hungry Slackers, May 13, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Manhattan Minuet (Audio CD)
Faithful, note-perfect reproductions of some of Raymond Scott's best songs. Scott was a leading jazz composer of the 1930's and 40's whose songs are instantly recognizable to those of us who grew up watching Warners Brothers cartoons - his material was often adapted for them because of its bouncy, quirky qualities. The recording and arrangements are perfect, as if someone snuck digital recording equipment into Scott's studio 60 years ago. You'll bop out to such classics as "Tobacco Auctioneer" and "New Year's Eve in a Haunted House," to why they left out his best-known song "Powerhouse" is unclear. Great rainy-morning brunch music.
