In 2008 our use of oil cost us $1 trillion more than it did just ten years earlier. Our domestic supplies have dwindled to the point that we are now importing 70% of the oil we use. Worldwide oil is being consumed at twice the rate that new oil is being discovered, and oil reserves are declining steadily. At the same time demand for oil is increasing rapidly, and the U.S. is, for the first time, facing fierce competition for the remaining oil. Our oil purchases are putting hundreds of billions of dollars into the hands of nutcase petrodictators making them more powerful while weakening our economy. But there is good news. We have the technologies to get ourselves completely off oil in 15 years. This effort will require commitment, money, and intelligent guidance. History has shown that the United States can face a major challenge and accomplish the seemingly impossible. This book develops a comprehensive plan to move us off of oil, and frames it as a legislative agenda for our new President.
