I grew up with Patti Page, unavoidably "absorbing" her hit songs (they were omnipresent and forever-playing on AM radio and television's "Your Hit Parade). At the same time I had discovered singers like Ella, Sarah, Peggy and Frank and, as a result, never gave Patti much credit as a "musician." How wrong I was. From this album and several others, it's easy to gather a hundred or more recorded examples of a vocalist with pitch-perfect intonation; exquisite, drawn-out phrasing (especially of verses to songs); and total command of tempos. She could answer the requirement of '40s and '50s recordings--mainly, "bringing in" a tune at 3 minutes (preferably closer to 2)--yet leave listeners with the impression that they had just experienced a performance of far greater weight and length. In other words, Patti was a "natural"--one of those professionals who could make the most challenging, difficult material sound easy. She could be talking to a guest or to the audience one moment and then suddenly seque, seamlessly and flawlessly, into the next tune on the program.

The charge that, compared to other female singing stars of the period, Patti sounds mechanical and lacking in emotion depth is not completely without merit. Her whole approach to any song, simple or difficult, is founded on "control." There's never a question about her musicianship and vocal technique, but Patti's love of her craft, or of a song flawlessly sung, extends to containing the range and depth of emotions to ensure there are no surprises, no giving away of anything overly personal, and above all no "keys" opening doors to her most private thoughts and emotions.

I first heard this album back in the '60s when it was first released. My brothers and I belonged to a record club and it was erroneously sent by mistake. At first listen we thought it was comical in comparison to Dylan, the Beatles and other groups. But as we listened to it on occasion it began to grow on us. Eventually this was our listening choice when it was time to hit the sack. We really grew to love the various songs and theme. I waited all these years for it to come out on CD format. Good Job.

Kitsch but great kitsch. Loved it in the 60's and it is still great. I wish he had recorded the complete "Tower."

I bought this as a birthday gift for a friend. They were both amazed and awestruck at this lp. They are a total Robert Goulet fan.
