I don't know about PVC or plastic coating or anything like that, but I CAN tell you that it is worth the price if you're planning on having more than one kid. We opened up our Winkel in Jan 2004 for our oldest son...our daughter used it throughout 05 and early 06...and our youngest son has had his hands and mouth on it for two months now. It hasn't cracked, faded, etc despite months...YEARS...of use! I get this toy for everyone having their first child as all three of mine have loved it.

Beware of counterfeit product. I received a toy that was clearly not of the quality of the one I checked out at the store.

I thought this was a fool proof purchase, perfect for baby to grab and chew, I did a lot of research. Only thing I didn't consider is that when baby grabs and pulls to mouth to chew, the arch shaped tubes go to the back/side teeth. Which would be great if that is where they are teething, but most babies get their front teeth first, and this toy does little to nothing for helping with that. My LO got his front bottom teeth at 5mo, he is now 7 mo, I purchased this toy at 4 months and he still shows little interest in it (despite my efforts to make him like it). Hopefully when his side and back teeth start coming in he will get use out of it.
Gave it 3 stars because I'm hoping that we might eventually get use out of it.
Sidebar: I'm not sure if it is the case with all of them, but the square in the middle of ours only rattles 50% of the time.

My grandson LOVES his Winkle toy! At 4 mos old, he's learning to grasp with both hands and being BPA free, this is a wonderful, safe toy that holds his interest - also nice for teething!

My little one loved playing with this from very early on, maybe around two months and she has always been tiny. My nephew couldn't stop playing with it and he was over 20 pounds at five months. It's easy for them to get their fingers into and around, it's easy to manuever a rung to chew on (my little one got soooo frustrated with other teethers trying to get that magical angle to fit in her mouth), it's bright, it's easy to clean. Who could ask for more?

Our son loves this toy. He is absolutely fascinated with it! He loves reaching for it and will actually put forth quite an effort to do so. He is teething right now, and it must feel good on his gums because he instantly puts it in his mouth and will not take it out. He has a very strong grip and will actually put up a fight when we try to take it away from him! This is a big hit!

This is our 4 months old baby's second favorite toy.

Pros:
+ Full of slender surfaces for easy grasping one or two-handed at any angle (great for two-handed play).
+ Flexible and soft, so baby doesn't get hurt or cry when bonking her own head.
+ Lots of colors (seems purple is our baby's favorite!) and funky shape that baby likes to stare at.
+ Safe for sucking and nibbling (no hard surfaces/edges or toxins). Per manhattantoy.com, "The Winkel is made of PU tubing (polyurethane) and as such does not contain BPA or PVC and meets the SPSIA and European requirements for phthalates."
+ Built-in rattle, although I wish it were slightly louder.
+ Can be refrigerated for teething relief per company website.
+ Easily tethered to bib or stroller using pacifier straps like Ulubulu Universal Pacifier Clip, OMG Cupcakes.
+ Great for eye tracking exercises (softly jiggle and move it around in baby's line of sight, watch her follow with her eyes and head!).

Cons:
- Slightly bulky (nitpicking) compared to Sassy Ring O' Links Rattle Developmental Toy (our baby's favorite). We definitely like having both toys, but keep this one at home instead of in the already-bursting diaper bag, whereas Sassy Ring never leaves our side (easily fits in bag and pants pockets).

An actual rattle like Bright Starts Rattle and Shake Barbell Rattle is louder, and I had thought would be more amusing for our baby, but fails to hold her attention for more than a second. It's also very limited in graspable area, so only stays in her tiny hand for a few seconds at most. It may be good for an older baby, but for now, just sits at home unused.

This was the first toy that my son could pick up, play with and explore (at 2 plus months). The rings were small enough for him to hold and as he attempted to chew on the pieces as he shoved the Atom into his face, I did not have to worry about the toy poking his eyes. My husband and I loved this toy and brought it every where we traveled. My son is 5 months and still enjoys playing with it. We loved this toy so much that we nicknamed it the Atom.

We purchased this for our 5-month old twins. Most of their toys are too bulky or heavy for them to practice grabbing. This is a simple concept that made it fun for them AND it's excellent for developing fine motor skills. Bonus- easy to wash!

My 5 month old enjoys chewing on it. I wash it daily with soap and water and air dry on a clean towel. Entertains him, as to its developmental benefits, I would be speculating and I don't wish to. It keeps him occupied.
