Product Description

Product Description

Skwish from Manhattan Toy is a time honored classic, instantly recognizable, an intriguing blend of ingenious design and developmental function. The geometrical shape and interconnecting wooden dowels have long piqued the curiosity of adults – imagine how it must appear to a baby as they begin to experience the world around them? Skwish may not turn every baby into a mathematical genius, but every baby can joyfully benefit from its unique developmental features. Its natural finish and one of a kind shape instantly capture baby’s attention. The lightweight wooden dowels, smooth finish, and elastic ties make it easy for little hands to grab and hold. Babies will love “Skwishing” it down and watching it return to its original shape – Skwish is a perfect clutching toy for developing gross motor skills. The beads slide back and forth along the dowels when shaken, producing a very pleasing rattle and allowing baby to explore sound and learn cause and effect. The spatial and tactile elements have been shown to be helpful to those on the Autism spectrum. Skwish is carefully constructed of sustainable wood and features a smooth, un-dyed exterior surface. For over 30 years, Manhattan Toy has been making award-winning, high quality, visually appealing toys for babies, toddlers and kids. Manhattan Toy offers more than 500 exclusive, original product designs distributed and sold worldwide through specialty retail stores, catalogs and websites. All of our products, from the newest concepts to our time-tested classics, are innovatively designed to inspire imaginative play and delight our customers.

From the Manufacturer

Our Classic Skwish goes natural. Skwish fascinates babies with its twisted web of rods, strings and beads. Babies squeeze and stretch Natural Skwish and watch in amazement as it slowly pops back up into its original shape. As with our other Skwish products, Natural Skwish is made from replenishable rubberwood with a water based, non-toxic finish. Skwish offers visual stimulation and helps develop motor skills in children.

I love that all the materials are natural and there is no worry about chemicals in plastic or lead in the paint.

Purchased one of these in the natural color you see here, then also found one in the "color burst" variety. Ended up giving this away to a friend who just had a baby and saved the other one for my son. I don't know if my baby would have enjoyed this toy any less without the colored paint (and I know some moms are really concerned about giving anything painted to their kids for fear of the baby eating potentially dangerous paint chips) and I'm happy to report that this is by far my baby's favorite toy to play with. Great item! Easy for little ones to grab, hold on to, and manipulate. Excellent developmental toy for infants.

We love the Skwish, and my 7.5mo does, too! It's easy for him to grab and he likes chewing on it, which is why I purchased the Natural finish as opposed to the painted version of the same product. The Skwish 'collapses' so it can fit into a diaper bag which is also a nice feature. I also really like the sound that the wooden balls make when you gently rattle them back and forth.. it's very soothing.

My son loves this toy at 5 1/2 months...it was a little too much for him before that - and may be too much for a small 5 1/2 month old. I do find that I'm a little paranoid that the little balls are going to pop off since everything makes its way to his mouth. But I check them ALL the time and they seem really solid. Overall - great entertaining toy!

I bought this for my oldest daughter when she was a few months old. The structure of the toy makes it easy for little hands to grasp well before they have the motor control to grasp other toys. I thought that maybe my oldest daughter just preferred this toy, but my son and youngest daughter both started picking this up too around 2-3 months before they could grasp other toys. All my babies seemed to like chewing on the wooden nubs at the end and like the gentle sound it makes when shook.

While I wouldn't say that it's an overall favorite that we carried around for all of infancy, it does seem to be great for very young babies just learning to grasp. My son still liked it well into 7 months or so. We'll see how long my youngest stays interested in it.

3 little teething mouths later, it still looks new. The materials have held up well. I love that all the materials are natural and there is no worry about chemicals in plastic or lead in the paint. We have the "Burst" painted version....the colors are cheerful and bright and it's something I don't mind having out on the floor. I like the look of the natural version and think that my youngest probably wouldn't mind something without color. We have other natural wood toys that she seems just as interested in. I also like that you can squish it flatter to stuff it in a diaper bag, as opposed to some bulkier toys.

With our 3 little ones, I've discovered that some things my oldest loved were uninteresting to my younger ones, and vice versa. When a toy is loved by all 3, I know that it's more than just one baby's preferences. I highly recommend this toy to people with young infants just learning how to pick things up. I give it 5 stars for a 2 mos - 5 mos old toy.

All our kids love this thing. My 3 year old gets a kick out of squishing it flat then watching it spring back to it's original shape. And my 4 month old loves to shake it.

I thought naturally finished meant unfinished but the two are not the same. This doesn't have the bad smell that another Manhattan Toy I have has but since my son constantly bites, sucks and chews everything you give him and I wouldn't personally feel like sucking it myself with some sort of finish (besides beeswax/food oil) so neither would I want him to do that. However, I gave it 4 stars because it looks like lots of fun and is fantastic for little hands to grasp and manipulate. It's has interesting features and makes a little noise as the beads in the middle slide down the rods. I'll definitely be keeping it for him when he shows more interest in examining, squishing and playing with it, as opposed to just mouthing it. I would prefer it unfinished but overall it's a really good toy.

This is a great classic toy. My mom still has one from when my brother was a baby. I liked the idea of a natural wood toy, but I didn't think about the fact that my daughter would be more impressed with black/white or colors. It is currently being used as a door stop in her room. She does crawl over and play with it from time to time but I really wish I had not gone with the natural color! It is good quality.

I just picked this up in a secondhand store for my six-month-old. Goodness, this thing is clever. It kept his attention…
And if I'm being completely honest, I'm fascinated by it too.
