This review is from: Manhunter: Forgotten (Paperback)
Marc Andreko's Manhunter was like the little DC title that could. Well, almost could. FORGOTTEN collects the last issues of Manhunter's run as a monthly title. Despite great reviews and a vocal loyal following, the monthly never really took off the way it deserved to. But, heck, they had to cancel it twice before it would stay down. Still, its run was cut short with little warning; this collection ends with the two-issue "wrap-up" tale with which Andreko capped the end of the monthly.

There are a number of reasons to love this book. Andreko writes great characters -- Kate Spencer is as fully realized a vigilante as you'll find anywhere in the DC Universe; add to that the fact that she's a strong woman who's not a cliche (and who's painfully self-aware whenever she slips into that roll). The book's wonderful supporting cast includes one of the few believable gay relationships in comics, notable both for its lack of melodrama and for the fact that it's two men (for some reason the comics world is generally more interested in -- or at least more comfortable with -- same-sex relationships between two hot chicks... err... two women). Not that the book as a whole is without its share of Big Drama; this vigilante thing isn't easy, and Kate's just a single mother with nothing at all like the resources of Bruce Wayne. But at a time when DC has been throwing all its efforts into creating big crossover "Events" Manhunter is a refreshing example of just plain good story-telling.

Oh, and the art, primarily by Michael Gaydos, is gorgeous.
