I will try to make this as spoiler-free as possible for the enjoyment of everyone who wants to know my review without having read the book, but probably you already know what happens anyway by just reading the book jacket.

4.0 out of 5 stars Book hunting? This one's a keeper!, May 22, 2001
As my first taste of a Jennifer Crusie book, I think I ordered well. While not a book for those who enjoy stories that require heavy brain use, readers of all types can gain pleasure from this book. For the serious in you, Manhunting touches on commitment and career issues. For the practical person, the orderly list-making and the perfecting art of finding a suitable mate will appeal. But most importantly, for the romantic reader, Manhunting will have you climbing up the wall with anticipation -- like any good romance book should.

Kate Svenson has what she thinks any woman would want: beauty, money, a successful career, and an apartment full of French Provincial furniture. Unfortunately, she also has too much time and lonliness on her hands. Tired of the single life, Kate and her best friend, Jessie, come up with the plan to beat all plans. Thus begins Kate's search for the perfect man. Armed with her list of qualifications (tall, distinguised and successful), Kate heads to Toby's Corner, Kentucky, home of The Cabins Resort and vertical golf -- a magnetic haven for the suave businessmen of Kate's desire.

Well, it started out a good plan... Within the first few days of her arrival, Kate has managed to attract men that meet her requirements but with disastrous results. The only thing decent out of the whole trip? The two new friendships she's made: Penny, gorgeous and engaged, who feels she needs to do a little harmless dating before she's tied down for good, and Jake, the rugged resort handyman and exact opposite of the man of her dreams. Hopeless and exhausted, Kate is on the verge of giving up. But wait...is there a light at the end of this tunnel after all?

Manhunting is a delicious romp of a novel, full of sexual tension and too much pride. And while readers can guess the ending before cracking the spine on this book, it does not deter whatsoever from the sheer pleasure of reading. Contains writing that veers toward inexperienced during the first few chapters, but soon Jennifer Crusie hits her groove and takes off like a woman on a mission. Excellent debut from an author worth reading again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't walk, RUN and get this book!, June 21, 2000
This is one of Ms. Crusie's best books ever. She has her standard quirky, fun-loving, bantering characters that Jennifer Crusie is known for, but the heroine and hero are such a HOT couple and fun that I didn't want it to end. Kate and Jake are the total opposite on the surface but once you get below that cover layer you find two people that are such a great compliment of one another that you want to push them faster together. And watching Kate deal with the dates from hell, and Jake give her a hard time over them, you just laugh all the way through the story. I loved this book and it is on my keeper shelf to be read when I need a pick-me-up.

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth hunting down, August 23, 2000

This was Jennifer Crusie's first published romance and it's so sophisticated and slick and funny, that any would be writer will go green with envy.

It has all the trade mark Crusie attributes even at this early stage - great humour, even better energy level - it's a fun, uplifting read. It also has a great heroine in Kate, who is too thin, too successful but also too staid. She makes you aware of the price Kate has paid to get where she's at. And you laugh out loud at the terrible dates she manages to get for herself on her one woman mission to 'manhunt' herself a husband.

Jake is an equally great character. He is warm and lazy and funny. He also needs more direction in his life.

Both lovers help bring out the best in each other - which is what love's all about after all...

There was a quirk or two with the secondary characters (Jake's brother is unexpectedly brutal (emotionally, not physcially!) in one scene) so it's only a 4 star rating, but it shows Crusie to be the talent she so obviously is, from the word go.

4.0 out of 5 stars Even the best-laid plans go awry ..., April 16, 2001
This is the third Jennifer Cruise book I've read so far and it's hilarious! I read it in one day ~~ despite the chaotic holiday weekend! What turns out to be a short-lived summer romance ends up being a hot romance. It was a book I couldn't put down.

Kate is a well-off business woman, who after three failed engagements, sets off to a resort in Kentucky in hopes to meet Mr. Right. She set up a list of the qualities that she wanted to see in her Mr. Perfect ~~ only to discover that despite best intentions, it didn't work. Hilarious accidents seem to befall the men who chase after her. As she begins to despair that she'll never find Mr. Perfect, Cupid has other ideas.

Jake is the man every woman loves to love ~~ handsome, charming, laid-back and sexy ~~ the only thing stopping him was a lack of ambition. He gave up the rat race five years prior just to enjoy life again. That was before Kate crosses paths with him. And she turns his life upside down, much to his chagrin.

Then the rest is history ~~ two people rediscovering what love is. And Cruise writes with gentle humor throughout the book ~~ and saucy sex scenes engraces the book (though not as revealing as some of her later books! Thank heavens!) ~~ it's a sweet book filled with laughter. It's a read that I highly recommend if you're taking the afternoon off to hang out at the pool or at the beach ~~ it's light, saucy and fun. So far, Jennifer Cruise hasn't disappointed me yet.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun and engaging!, April 4, 2001
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This great early effort by Jennifer Crusie is a fun, fast read that will leave you grinning. It is the story of Kate Svenson, a serious business woman with a string of failed engagements behind her. With some heavy-handed encouragement from a meddling friend, she goes to a secluded golf resort with a plan to catch a husband. As her frustration with her would-be suitors mounts, she finds herself spending more and more time with the inn's caretaker, Jake Templeton. The two couldn't be more different - Kate is wedded to her high-powered career whereas Jake deliberately left it all behind to enjoy life on the lake. You will laugh out loud as Kate dispatches her various suitors and Jake teaches her the joys of fishing.

5.0 out of 5 stars HUNT FOR THIS BOOK! QUICK!, December 4, 2000
By
Desmond Chan (Bishan North Singapore) - See all my reviews
MANHUNTING is stupendously hilarious with Jennifer Crusie's fast quips and great one liners from the characters. It shows how miraculously how our fates could intertwine and blossom into unexpected romances. Ms. Crusie gives romance a bone-tickling tag to it with sweet poignancy and emphathetic sensitivity to the character's development. Kate is the modern independent hard-edged career woman who insists on embarking her plans to a wonderful life, but little did she know her match was to be one of the most incompatible - Jake Templeton, a man embittered by divorce and the manipulative and cold business life he once was engaged to.

MANHUNTING churns out humour fast and vigorous with enough slapsticks to entertain during Kate's visit to Cabin Resort - but this only encompasses half of the charm in this book. The characters are wickedly flawed yet true-to-life and makes the reading even more genuine with a sparkle. The insecurity and vulnerability of Kate marks the tombstone of every woman's nightmare and Jake as a sensitive new age guy is deliciously endearing. It's this kind of romance that hauls back rollicking fun with nostalgia and effervescent chemistry.

Ms. Crusie has never been better before and this time after the rejuvenating read - it better send woman going hunting not for the men, but this fabulous book to keep you through the festive season.

5.0 out of 5 stars The plan seemed simple enough, November 20, 2000
Find a successful (rich) and distinguished bachelor and nab him for a husband. For thirty-five year old Kate Svenson, the clock was ticking and she was tired of being alone. After three unsuccessful engagements, she was willing to risk anything in order to find that perfect partner. She required a man with the same ambitious nature and financial drive she had. She wanted a man she could develop an empire with. And she was going to find him at The Cabins in Toby's Corner, Kentucky. What she found was a slew of men who should have appealed to her but didn't. And what was worse, they were dropping like flies around her one by one through her own volition or by some invisible hand of fate.

The one man who is avoiding her like the plague is Jake Templeton, the handyman who keeps everything nice and neat around The Cabins. These are adjectives that he might use to describe his life until Kate Svenson arrives at The Cabins and fascinates him with her inability to hold on to a man for any length of time and also entrances him with her unexpected vulnerability.

Jennifer Crusie has written a brilliant and sometimes poignant romance that sometimes crosses the line into women's fiction. But the point is, it is an entertaining and witty story about two people who discover an uncanny friendship and an even more unexpected love. The author's use of smart dialogue between characters really helps to hold this story together. Though the actions that take place are uncommonly slapstick, Crusie manages to hold on to the seriousness of the relationship without allowing the characters to lose their integrity or sense of development.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is one of my favorite Crusie's, June 16, 2000
Manhunting is a five star read if there ever was one. If you're feeling blah and want a good laugh - along with a wonderful romance - you can't get better than this!

Kate Svensen is thirty-five, gorgeous and has a successful career. She's the kind of heroine we all love to hate. But wait a minute this is a Crusie heroine after all and not your standard perfectly coifed heroine. Not at all. Kate may be more successful than most of us ever dream of becoming but she's also insecure and more than a little bit unhappy. Her job bores her, her breasts are starting to droop and she's given up on love after dating a string of losers who only want her for her money. Despite this Kate still wants a husband, a compatible husband who is as successful and driven as she is. And what better place to find him than at an exclusive golf resort catering to singles?

But instead of meeting a decent hard-working man Kate only finds more losers at the resort. The trip isn't a total bust however because she does meet Jake and the two strike up an instant friendship. Jake is beautiful and they have a ton of fun together. But he's also totally unmotivated, admittedly lazy, and just about the slowest moving person Kate has ever come across. He's so not what Kate is looking for.

Jake had been married to a cold, self-centered woman and now wants to settle down with a nice, dumb bimbo who thinks he's the end-all be-all of her world. Definitely not Kate. But the two are honest with each other and begin spending a lot of time together because they believe they are "safe" with each other.

All their well-laid plans are blown to shreds when love takes over and then the fun really begins!

Manhunting is a classic Jennifer Crusie tale filled with humorous situations, tons of witty dialogue that is simply about two people who love spending time together. The conflict is believable and never feels contrived and the book doesn't get weighed down with subplots. There are a few great secondary characters who add to the fun but never take over the spotlight. "Manhunting" is the book to choose if you need a quick "pick-me-up".

5.0 out of 5 stars Love is sometimes right under your very nose, November 12, 2000
By
Jennifer Crusie's Manhunting which was her first novel and the last one of hers I read was just as enjoyable as all her other novels. Ms. Crusie has a flair for making me laugh. Since I take mass transit, it's not always a good idea to read of one Ms. Crusie's novels as the people sitting next to me sometimes tend to slide over or give me that look (is she crazy) after I've just burst out into fit of giggles. Kate Svenson a woman on a mission to find Mr. Right and Jake Templeton a man who swore he would never be serious about another woman was captivating. Kate and Jake's friendship grew into a fierce attraction. It was amazing how the entire town guessed where both Kate and Jake's feelings lie but the two of them didn't catch on until they were too far gone to notice. Kate and Jake's story was highly entertaining. Whenever I need a pick me up, I pick up Jennifer Crusie as she always comes through.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another good Crusie romance book., April 14, 2001
This is the fourth book that I've read by Jennifer Crusie, and I've enjoyed them all. "Manhunting" centers on the life of a woman named Kate, who is in her thirties, and desperate to get married. After three failed engagements, she and her friend, Jessie, decide to come up with a "plan." This plan involves the qualifications that any man must possess, in order for Kate to take an interest in him. During August, Kate decides to take a vacation at a resort in Kentucky, where she plans on meeting her future husband. She dates several men, but each date ends in disaster. Depressed that she is not meeting anyone who fits the plan, Kate thinks her chances of getting married are slim to none, until she finally takes a look around her, and sees that, sometimes, the person that best suits you is right under your nose.
