Review

A harmonious pop attack. Four stars. --Paul Davies, Q Magazine, September 1987

A warm, poetic record. Even at their loudest the tunes are understated and invite successive listens. --Paul Mann, NME, September 1987

Product Description

Out of print for nearly 20 years, MANIA is the breathtaking second album from the London quartet THE LUCY SHOW. This WORDS ON MUSIC reissue remasters all 10 album-tracks, plus adds 7 bonus songs (5 of which have never been commercially released), the video to the MTV hit “A Million Things,” and liner notes by Big Takeover editor, Jack Rabid. MANIA rose to the very top of the college radio charts in 1986 by injecting poignant melodies onto a textured soundscape, ricocheting with shimmering guitars from the production of the legendary JOHN LECKIE (New Order, Stone Roses, Radiohead, Trashcan Sinatras, Felt). MANIA begins with the swirling "The Land and the Life" – a captivating, hypnotic piece that layers sugar-sweet BEACH BOYS harmonies on top of reverb-drenched guitars. On "Sojourn's End" singer and bassist Rob Vandeven recalls JOHN LENNON's work on THE BEATLES’ Rubber Soul. Like an up-tempo "Nowhere Man," Leckie's timeless, exquisite production is on full display, carefully melting Vandeven's breezy voice with the song's warm instrumental arrangements. "Sad September" is an elegant song offering a bittersweet palette of brushed drums, sweeping keys, and plaintive acoustic picking in which every wistful syllable signals the longing for love lost. "A Million Things" scored THE LUCY SHOW a major college radio hit in the States, and its video received significant MTV airplay. "Melody" demonstrates in clear fashion how THE LUCY SHOW was as relevant and trend-setting as any member of England's movement of artists in the mid-1980s that eschewed the slick, glossy techno of the times in favor of music that coated 1960s melodies with modern usages of reverb and feedback (a movement that spawned not only JAMC, but also My Bloody Valentine, The Primitives, and the C86 scene). "Part of Me Now" features the warmth and charming vulnerability of guitarist and singer Mark Bandola's voice, building a direct connection with the audience with an intimate, up-front delivery (e.g. PETER GABRIEL). "New Message," MANIA’s second single, closes the album on an incredible high, enhanced by the appearance of England's premier trumpeter, Roddy Lorimer (Spiritualized, Blur). One of the classic post-punk albums, Mania stands tall with the best recordings of the era by THE CURE, ECHO & THE BUNNYMEN, JESUS & MARY CHAIN, and NEW ORDER.

5.0 out of 5 stars one of the best 80's bands and album, May 14, 2006

I have one complaint - WHEN WILL THEIR FIRST ALBUM BE RELEASED!

The Lucy Show is one of the coolest bands to come out of the 80's and sadly mainly people don't know them. Unfortunately their music has never been available on cd either until Mania's release last year. If you're lucky enough to run into this cd, do yourself a musical favor and pick it up. If you don't know the band they were fronted by Mark Bandola and Rob Vandeven who shared vocal duties and lyric writing as well. The result is a nice mix of variable sounding tracks that have great melody, harmony and a great 80's pop sound. At times they remind me of Jesus and the Mary Chain, the Cure or the Psychedelic Furs. I think the best tracks are the "Sun and Moon", "Land and the Life" and "A Million Things". A few songs aren't as strong like "New Message" and " Sojourn's End", but overall it's got a great sound and some cool extras like "Jam in E" and several live cuts. It's a shame they didn't stay together longer. Here's hoping they release their first album "Undone" which I think is an even better album and one the best to be released in the 80's.

5.0 out of 5 stars and all the leaves are falling to the ground, March 5, 2007
This review is from: Mania (Audio CD)
in all its murky beauty, post beatles, postpunk, part cure part bunnymen, all

totally brilliant playing singing writing, the lucy show's "mania" is

an album of very very accomplished, moving songs--a classic, a match for

their astonishing debut, "Undone," and then some. the pop songs--skipalong, hop

along, peppy loveliness--are lilting, rocking, bopping janglefests (with a number of

great dark touches); the balladry's first rate as well (the simplicity of

"part of me now" and "sad september" are magic, ace, NICE.

this is one incredible band. forget about "forgotten"--the lucy show's time

has come again.

i am biased. i was obsessed with them for years. i saw them play to 8 people

in a very small southern california club in 1987 and i could not

believe them--they played as though they were gigging for 8 million.

a band i adore, the black watch, supposededly formed the day after they say

the lucies as well; score TWO!

this is a great release for anyone who likes melody and catchiness--i.e. YOU!

but this buy this buy this!!!!!
