one of the best 80's bands and album,

I have one complaint - WHEN WILL THEIR FIRST ALBUM BE RELEASED!The Lucy Show is one of the coolest bands to come out of the 80's and sadly mainly people don't know them. Unfortunately their music has never been available on cd either until Mania's release last year. If you're lucky enough to run into this cd, do yourself a musical favor and pick it up. If you don't know the band they were fronted by Mark Bandola and Rob Vandeven who shared vocal duties and lyric writing as well. The result is a nice mix of variable sounding tracks that have great melody, harmony and a great 80's pop sound. At times they remind me of Jesus and the Mary Chain, the Cure or the Psychedelic Furs. I think the best tracks are the "Sun and Moon", "Land and the Life" and "A Million Things". A few songs aren't as strong like "New Message" and " Sojourn's End", but overall it's got a great sound and some cool extras like "Jam in E" and several live cuts. It's a shame they didn't stay together longer. Here's hoping they release their first album "Undone" which I think is an even better album and one the best to be released in the 80's.

in all its murky beauty, post beatles, postpunk, part cure part bunnymen, alltotally brilliant playing singing writing, the lucy show's "mania" is an album of very very accomplished, moving songs--a classic, a match for their astonishing debut, "Undone," and then some. the pop songs--skipalong, hop along, peppy loveliness--are lilting, rocking, bopping janglefests (with a number of great dark touches); the balladry's first rate as well (the simplicity of "part of me now" and "sad september" are magic, ace, NICE. this is one incredible band. forget about "forgotten"--the lucy show's time has come again. i am biased. i was obsessed with them for years. i saw them play to 8 people in a very small southern california club in 1987 and i could not believe them--they played as though they were gigging for 8 million. a band i adore, the black watch, supposededly formed the day after they say the lucies as well; score TWO! this is a great release for anyone who likes melody and catchiness--i.e. YOU! but this buy this buy this!!!!!

Good CD, yes Undone is better,

Agreed, with most of the reviews noted...I actually played Undone all the time as a DJ with a college radio station in the 80's and sadly I left the album at the station and all I have an old cassette. They actually released Mania on CD in the late 80's (I have the version released then with 2 bonus tracks, different cover). The songs are still classic...but the mood of the first album...(and White Space is a great track)...

I had this album back in the 80s, and figured I'd see how it held up. I don't think it would win any new fans, but if you liked it then it is great fun to hear it again.

Great Lost Band,

I love this band. I love this album, although I think UNDONE is the better of the 2. I wish they would get around to rereleasing it. This is one of those bands that had IT and let IT slip away. They toured w/ Love and Rockets in 1986 and put on a mind-blowing show.

Unavailable for years, this has been re-released on CD and about time. I used to have to listen to my sister's vinyl every year to hear the sublime "Sad September." If you like 80's alternapop (before "alternative" was invented as a category, natch), with lush cascading melodies (Sad September, Part of Me Now) with some more driving beats as well (VIew From the Outside, New Message), you'll enjoy this CD.

WHEN WILL THEY RELEASE "...UNDONE"!!?? I like Mania, but I love ...undone... I had it on vinyl since '86 and it got destroyed by a leaky roof last year... the songs keep echoing in my head more than those on Mania. This is a great album, the songs will stick with you, for sure, such as A Million Things, The Land and the Life, etc. Worth it, from an overlooked group.

Whatever album has "The White Space",

All I know is I saw the Lucy Show open for Love & Rockets at the Eagle's Club in Milwaukee yearrrrrs ago (mid 80s) and fell in love with their sound. Even got to meet them - they were really nice. They played a song called 'White Space'. It was a GREAT Song!!! Then they seemed to disappear from Earth.Whatever album has that song on it, I want it! Was it only a b-side to 'Ephemeral' (This Is No Heaven)? This album, 'Mania', is good but I prefer the earlier songs I have heard. |
