Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal
Grade 7-9?Alien parasites come out of the dark every 400 years, this time hosted by two unsuspecting American tourists in Ireland. When the tourists (two high school teachers) return to the States and begin teaching, the parasites move on to juicier fare?high school students. When it comes to horror, Peel is no Christopher Pike or R.L. Stine. Poor grammar ("there were a whole mess of people") and sloppy writing ("...it had self-destructed or something") abound in this silly book, making it a poor choice for reluctant readers. The misleading title sounds like serial-killer material, not nasty parasites killing imaginative teens in their sleep.?Ann Cook, Winter Park Public Library,

5.0 out of 5 stars (6 stars) The very best book written by mankind?, July 12, 1999
By the forever Bard "osteno" (Sundsvall, Sweden) - See all my reviews
Wow! Maniac is so good! I'd never read an entire book before I read Maniac but it only took me one single night to read it all. I read it in english although english is not my native language. The story is awesome and what an intelligent book this is, I can't imagine how smart John Peel must be to write such a great book. Maniac has the the perfect setup. The only chapter in the book that wasn't a ***** one was the chapter in which Vincent met the aliens, because it made no sense, however if you don't have read Maniac yet it's now time to do so. Maniac gives you a lot of thinking and it might change your life!

3.0 out of 5 stars A mind boggling story., December 8, 1998
By A Customer
Maniac was a very original thriller. I liked the fact that they made the villan a kind of parasite. It was around for a very long time, and it only came back every four hundred years. It's kind of a Freddy Crougar thing where they get you in your sleep. The parasites feed off of intelligent people's minds and eventually they die. Dawn and Shane's theory sounded crazy, but in the end they were right.Maniac is a good book that makes you think and is a good suspense story.
