Cut Your Teeth- 7/10 Here Holy Spain are a Post-Grunge, Pop Post-Punk, Rock and Roll band from Dallas Texas. Here Holy Spain have a confused sound on Manic, which is funny considering the name of the CD. At Times they are clearly influenced by grunge. At times you can hear elements of Post-Punk, but it's too poppy to be considered pure post punk. And of course there is the overall Rock and Roll/Punk feel to the album. But, they fail to fuse those styles together effectively, each sound seems to stand on its on within the CD. There is no doubt to the emotion and angst of the music, but the sound doesn't gel together. I feel like musical confusion is holding back the band, like some of it is forced. The Emotion is there, there is conviction, but they are taking the safe route musically. I feel like Here Holy Spain is on the cusp of being a really good band, but they just need to define their sound and take some risks. Manic certainly is not a bad CD, but it's not very memorable. The song by song review is a 72%, but the inconsistency of the music drives the overall review down to a 66%.
