While observing the Presidential election in Romania, a Congressional staffer is kidnapped by Communist rebels and held captive in a remote area of the Carpathian Mountains. The quest for his safe return takes Congressman Richard Thompson to a dark side of international politics which no one dares talk about in the hallowed halls of Congress. In trying to save the life of the young American, Thompson must do things he thought impossible for him to imagine, let alone execute.

Top selling author, Rick Robinson follows up his award winning novels The Maximum Contribution and Sniper Bid with a thrilling tale of political intrigue which will rock his readers to their very core. Read Manifest Destiny and you will understand why Robinson is quickly becoming known as the only author who puts “real politics” in his political thrillers. His stories are as real as today's headlines.

Editorial Reviews

Taut and tense political drama wrapped in American history and tradition. A solid and compelling journey. --J. A. 'Jack' Kerly, author The Hundredth Man

I m confident that this will be Rick Robinson's third consecutive, award winning, book. His writing skill and lifetime as 'insider you need to see' shine through with a riveting novel that keeps us on the edge of our seats. --Don McNay, syndicated columnist and Huffington Post Contributor

I maintain that the best storytellers hail from Kentucky and Rick Robinson is among them. A political insider in the Beltway and the Bluegrass, Robinson masters the vernacular of both. Anyone who knows anything about Kentucky politics--and Robinson does--knows it's often stranger than fiction. Once again, he has crafted a page-turning, can t-put-it-down-until-the-end, political thriller. Manifest Destiny is his best yet --Vicki Prichard, scriptwriter, Emmy award-winning doucmentary, Where the River Bends --Vicki Prichard, scriptwriter, Emmy award-winning doucmentary, Where the River Bends

5.0 out of 5 stars Recommend, Recommend, Recommend!! July 27, 2011
By Edwin
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I don't typically read many fiction novels, but after completing the first two books, I could not resist reading this third book in Robinson's series. Manifest Destiny is another suspense-filled journey in the life of Richard Thompson and arguably Robinson's best work yet. Robinson's descriptions and well-constructed characters craft a superb story that leaves you wanting more. If you like politics, history, and suspense, I would highly recommend this book!

2.0 out of 5 stars Let's take a reality check September 21, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I am stunned by the number of 5 star reviews - it makes me worried that I am reading the same book. I read lots of thrillers and enjoy them because they are clearly pure escapism and are not realistic. But this is a political thriller, with imaginary political characters so it must stand up to some kind of reality check - and it fails on many scores.

Can you imagine a US President being involved in a plot for the CIA to steal the Mace of the House of Representatives to give to the Russian President as a bargaining chip for cheaper oil? As I am an Aussie I learned a lot about US Congressional procedures and the history of the Mace which has 13 ebony rods representing the first 13 States of the Union, and that first Mace was destroyed when the Capitol Building was burnt in 1814 and another one was made in 1842 by a New York silversmith. None of this interesting background added any reality or believability to the plot.

I also cannot believe that a relatively recent member of the House could get dragged into the politics of Romania and help CIA covert agents to find his political agent who had been kidnapped by a group of old-time renegade Communists. As well his best friend strikes up a close relationship with a much younger First Class Air Hostess he meets on a flight to Romania, who stays on with him in Romania without any problems from the airline. Unbelievably she also gets involved and helps the CIA with their dirty work. It really would be a spoiler to mention the consequences when the unscrupulous Chief of Staff to the President decides to deliver the Mace himself to Romania.

Does all that need a reality check? My word it does. I only finished the book because I was fascinated to see what the plot was all about - and it was hardly worth the effort.

I have kindly given the book a 2 star rating because the writing and character development were reasonable.

4.0 out of 5 stars Political and international intrigue December 20, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Gripping account of overlapping, twisted political agendas. Twists and turns throughout that keep the reader engaged. Respectable job of mixing intensity with mystery. Some turns strain credibility, but by not becoming distracted by this the reader is treated to a compelling story line.

Really good book. After reading it I read his first book, Maximum Contribution, and his second book, Sniper Bid. Since many of the characters appear in all three books, and the books are chronological, it makes more sense to read them in that order. I enjoyed all three books and would read more by this author. He is a good story teller, and weaves in his tremendous inside knowledge of politics and government.

1.0 out of 5 stars terrible on all levels October 11, 2011
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I tried this book on the basis of its stellar ratings in this forum (more on this later). The author has not a hint of skill. The characterization is wooden, unimaginative, formulaic and yawn-inspiring. The female protagonists are all blonde-blue eyed beauties with the exception of one dark-haired siren). The samecan be said for the dialog... trite and hackneyed phrases make one wince. The plot is contrived and unbelievable. I must admit that I tried to stay with this novel but finally had to put it down with some 20 pages to complete.
I will no longer trust the rating system on amazon.....the participants are either extremely not very discerning or the results are being manipulated.

This is the third in Rick Robinson's series (Maximum Contribution, Sniper Bid, and Manifest Destiny) that involve a delightful group of characters who encounter some evil wrongdoers...I enjoyed the dialogue and the twisted plot.

4.0 out of 5 stars Manifest Destiny July 26, 2011
I have all three of Rick Robinson's books and this is the best to date. It is fascinating how he takes something so in consequential as the House of Representative's Mace and spins a fascinating thriller out of its theft. He introduces some great new characters to join Richard Thompson et al from Sniper Bid and Maximum Contribution. To be frank, I had to get to the end to find out what all the twists and turns meant and find out how it all tied together and who did what to whom. I know he is working on a fourth book in the series and I can't wait to get it on Kindle. I have to know what happens next to all these characters.Manifest Destiny
