Book Description

The Dancer With the Magic Bowl June 17, 1989
Never before translated into English, the Manimekhalai is one of the great classics of Indian culture. It is the story of a beautiful young dancer who decides to forego her looming career as a courtesan in order to dedicate her life (with the aid of gods, demigods, and a magic bowl called the Cow of Abundance) to charity and to attaining the 'bright light of knowledge.'

4.0 out of 5 stars Translation of the Manimekalai, April 21, 2008
By
megorox (Springfield, MO USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Manimekhalai: The Dancer With the Magic Bowl (Paperback)
Though I found the book helpful for a research project I was doing last semester, the translation did not always seem to be literal. When compared with other translations of the Manimekalai, there seemed to be a lot of discontinuity. Having said that, this particular translation was the most intriguing to read. Still helpful for understanding medieval Indian Buddhism.
