Manitou (The Sky People Saga) by Lexus Luke is a nice new addition to the popular YA fantasy-adventure genre. But unlike most of these offerings, Manitou brings more to the table than just a plucky heroine, mystical powers, mystery, suspense and fun. Luke mixes in Ute (Native American) origin myths with some fun sci-fi, Ancient Astronaut twists, and the paranormal, to broaden and uplift that category. Combine this with her realistic and sympathetic characterizations of modern Native Americans and their Euro-American neighbors, all attempting to go about their daily lives after a mysterious McGuffin is unearthed, hidden away, and then, frantically searched-for by tough, sadistic goons-- and you have a genuine page-turner. I especially enjoyed the characterization of Wray Sky, MawMaw, her grandma, standing in for the murdered mother, Kanaan, the hunk boyfriend, no player he, best girlfriend, the aunt-- all could be people you know or wish you knew. A first rate read!

I wasn't sure what to expect when I began this book, but the immediate sense that an unusual mystery was unfolding kept me engaged right to the last page.

I don't usually read YA books, so I have no standards by which to judge up, and this may be a good thing, because this fine novel shouldn't be limited to one age group. If you enjoy myth, magic, and mystery, you will be well rewarded by reading this. Like me, you will probably be impatiently waiting for the next book in the series.

A recommended read for all Young (and older) Adults. It's not only for the young, it's for all that are young and magical at heart. I've read reviews that compare this story with Harry Potter...I say it's one better. The subtle magic makes the story more realistic than the magic in the Potter books. The author has a way of convincing the reader that magic is REAL. You'll find yourself falling in love with Wary, Kanaan, and most of all with MawMaw. Even though this book is part of a series, it can stand on its own, but before the end of the book, you won't want it to end. You'll want to read more about these wonderful characters and just wait till the end...you'll be on pins and needles waiting for the next installment. I had the pleasure of being a beta reader for this book and am begging Ms. Luke to allow me the privilege on her next book.

Manitou The Sky People Saga by Lexus Luke is the first in a series of YA novels about a young girl adopted into the modern Ute Tribe. Wray Sky's parents were murdered and she has been transported from her New York home to live with her Ute great grandmother in Colorado. Wray firmly believes in good solid logic and scientific facts. But one day she comes face to face with with some ancient Ute magic and she begins to believe that science may not always have the answers.

This is pitched as a YA story, but I think it will appeal to younger and older readers. It definitely kept my interest throughout (and I fall into the older category) and, even though my reading time was limited, I managed to finish it in just a couple of days. (Honestly, I stayed up way later than I should have, too!) I even found myself thinking about what would happen next when I wasn't reading, which is always a great sign of well-developed, engaging characters and an intriguing story-line. I don't want to give anything away, but let's just say that the story isn't as predictable as you think it might be and the twists are definitely surprising. Overall this was an enjoyable read and I'm glad I chose it.

I started reading this novel a bit over two hours ago... Too bad I need to get some sleep... It's really a non-stopper... and I am quite impressed by the story... I usually don't pay much attention to the characers and focus instead on grammar, punctuation, believability and so on... But the choice of characters has really grabbed my attention...
Lexus sure knows how to make a YA happy with an ending, though making him cringe beforehand!!!

Move over Harry Potter!!! Manitou The Sky People Saga is a wonderful book that satisfies that mystery loving child in us all. Filled with loveable characters, drama, suspense, and the perfect amount of science fiction, I wouldn't know where to classify it other than to say it has something for everyone. I was a little thrown off by the title at first, but after reading the book I found it fits well. Couldn't put it down, eagerly awaiting the next book in the series!
