Interest in black baseball has led to the publication of a number of books on the subject, including John Holway's Black Diamonds ( LJ 10/1/89). Now Overmyer tells the story of the dynamic woman who, with her husband, owned the New Jersey team in the Negro National League. In 1936 the Manleys moved the team from Brooklyn to Newark, where they contended with the problems spawned by player contracts, rival owners, World War II, and white baseball czars. Integration in 1946 took away, with little or no payment, such players as Irvin, Campanella, Doby, and Newcombe, leading to the team's eventual demise in 1948. Manley, who wrote her own book-- Negro Baseball... Before Integration (1976. o.p.)--died in 1981. Recommended, especially for New Jersey library collections.
