Tekno the robotic dog, December 28, 2007
= Durability:4.0 out of 5 stars = Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars = Educational:2.0 out of 5 stars

Well, the robotic dog Tekno is fun, even though a lot of the fun is in figuring out how to make it do the things it is supposed to do.
First, as every other reviewer has said, it is remarkably hard getting Tekno out of his packing. The package can only be opened destructively - sturdy scissors recommended. Then you find that Tekno is fixed to a rigid plastic base by a clip and three thumbscrews. At least one of the screws is maddenly hard to reach with thumb, finger, or tool, and all are so tight that adult hand strength is hardly sufficient. After about 30 minutes of struggle, we had our dog out on the carpet.
Turn him on. He (she?) barks and whines at random intervals if you ignore him; he senses your presence with an infrared motion detector and hears your voice. He responds to pats on the head and to voices with sounds and flashing eyes. He says his name, and the remote control that comes with him says (in English) what he is supposed to be feeling, although the sound quality is very bad. We wanted to give him a name of our choosing, but that's not possible. He walks, but very inefficiently and slowly. He doesn't follow you around or anything. He doesn't sit or lie down or roll over. The remote can cause him to walk or dance (playing music!) or bark upon voice command. When the room goes dark, he snores for a couple of minutes and then goes silent. In the morning, he wakes right up when he hears you or detects your presence, and starts demanding attention.
But - no fleas, no dander, no poop, no kibble, no slobber, no chewed furniture, no carpet cleaning, no baths, and no vet bills! And he has an OFF switch!
In short, he does all that he is advertised to do. I bought him as a joke for my wife because she is always asking me to get a dog. We grownups will probably lose interest in Tekno in a few days, but then the grandkids will arrive. It will be great for them.

Kids nowadays, get so many things and lose interest so quickly. The toy is fun for a bit but for the price not worth it unless you have money to spare

Absolutely the most frustrating packaging ever conceived. First Tekno Dog I received took me twenty minutes to get out of packaging. If you do buy this, use a utility knife to cut away the clear plastic container. You will also need pliers and I believe a screwdriver. Ridiculous. After all that, the Tekno Dog was defective which I determined only after spending $15 on watch batteries for the remote. eToys refunded me the cost after returning it and I had to repurchase it at a higher price after the Christmas discount. Including cost to ship to my home and back to eToys (basic shipping), I spend over $70 for a toy that got used for an hour or two. Not worth the money.
