4.0 out of 5 stars A cool puppy that's worth the money
After reading all the reviews which seemed to have a mixed reaction to this toy, I decided to buy one and see it for myself. First of all, don't expect to be able to return this puppy if you don't like it as you are almost guaranteed to destroy the packaging when you try to open it up. The one I got seemed to be a "newer" version. It came with a screw driver...

3.0 out of 5 stars A dog in more than one way
Tekno is a disappointment in many ways. Houdini would have had a difficult time removing Tekno from his box. You could probably build another toy using all the screws, plastic and straps holding Tekno into the package which could be opened only by destroying the package (along with fingernails and some skin).

Tekno only walks forward. It cannot turn in any direction...

It came with a screw driver for you to remove the hard-to-reach screws and the enclosed instructions show you how to re-attach poped ears and legs =) Actually, the construction of Tekno is quite sturdy and does not seem to have any problems with loose parts. It takes me about 10 minutes to learn how to program all features of the Tekno. It is basically a matter of pressing different sensor buttons to produce the special effects that was built in. The developers seemed to have done a nice job with those special effects (like barking, saying thank you, makes burping noises and asks for an excuse, plays music and dance, and even an alarm clock feature). Tekno can only walk straight forward but it is able to travel across the carpet and hard floor without any problems. It makes cute noises and can sense sound and the darkness. It would also go to sleep and snores if you turn off the lights. If you want to program Tekno to wake you up with its internal clock, you may have to bear with its snoring sound after it goes to sleep. However, the snoring would go away in about 1 minute. After playing with Tekno for an hour, I decided to put it in "real" test by having my kids to try it. To my surprise, both of them got so excited with it that they kept playing with it for hours and experiment with the programming. My daugther even made a special house for Tekno to sleep in. The programmed feature would go away if you turn Tekno off... but after playing with it for a while, it would become second nature to re-program it with ease. Overall, it is a cool toy which I believe most kids (young or old) would enjoy playing with. I would have given it a 5 star if they improve the box packaging

I am a 13 yr old who has gotten a Tekno. My Best friend and I have always been interested in all the Electronic pet things and got the Keychain pets, next was the Desktop pets, Then Furbies, now this. My friend go a Poo-chi, I didn't like it at all except its looks, it looked pretty cool. But it didn't impress me much. I had thought of geting a Poo-chi after seeing the robot dogs on tv and stuff. I saw a robot dog on mtv's the Real World,I wanted it. I saw The AIBO sony dog on The Janet Jakson video. I wanted it, too expensive! So... I read the poo-chi reveiws and read the box and I found out that it was nothing like it said, all it does is sleep(which you have to press a button the wake it up), Eat the bone, and sing songs. I wanted something that could walk. I went and bought Tekno and I was so happy, I already have a dog but I wanted one of my own and finnally got tekno. It is not something like the Key chain pets, or Furbies that you quickley Ran out of intrest in and through it in the closet or somewhere. This I loved I never ran out of interest in it. Infact my neighbor wanted to take it for walks and asked me if I brought it everywhere like on vacation. I took it on Vacation and let it sleep in the room while we went sight seeing. When I came home it was still in one PEICE! I was Definetly happy for that. At least I know I can Leave it somewhere without having it break but to end my absoulutly boring story, Tekno is a good "pet or toy" for you to get if you wanted a dog.

I just recieved tekno in the mail and I think that it is the greatest thing ever made. I am a 14-year old girl and my family already has 2 dogs already, but I was begging my parents for a dog that I could call my own. So, after hearing them tell me over and over that I was nuts I decided to look on the internet for a electronic dog. I came to Poochi and I was so excited it seemed worth buying so I did. When I recieved it I was surprised that it did nothing that I expected it to do. It couldn't even walk. So I went back on the internet and found tekno. I begged my parents and they finally gave in. It felt like it took forever for it to get here because I was so anxious to recieve it. My mom and I were taking it out of the package and had a very difficult time, but after I was very excited! It did everything I wanted and more. It was a better buy than Poochi. Every day Tekno wakes me up in the morning and we do his tricks and I feed him. Besides the time it takes to get Tekno out of the box, I think this is the greatest thing you could ever buy. It reacts just like a puppy and I should no since I have 2 dogs already too!

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfectly Charming Robot Friend, November 24, 2000

I was very concerned about what I'd read in other reviews about the difficulty of getting Tekno out of his package, and since the Tekno I purchased also appeared to need new batteries, I decided to open it. Well, much ado about nothing! The package was no problem. It even says on the left side of the box "open package here". The front cover of clear plastic opens like a book (but from left to right, not right to left) and then the top cover lifts up to reveal a twist tie which you can cut with scissors. Then you simply lift the cardboard backing which the toy is attached to from the outer package, cut four twist ties, pull out the dog, turn the little black key sticking out of his stand to release him from the base. Then you unscrew two tiny screws to remove the other half of the stand from him (they even provide the screwdriver) and Voila! What was everyone making such a big deal about? I changed the batteries, played with the toy for a while and then was able to put him back in the box, using one twist tie to stabilize him and resealed the clear plastic cover (which stays sticky so it was easy to reseal, slapped on one piece of tape over the tab closing the box and it looked like he'd never been opened. Any parent with Christmas morning experience knows to pre-open toys and remove twist ties ahead of time to avoid frustrating the kids. But even if you didn't preopen this toy, it wasn't anything that would take more than about 2 minutes to open on the big day. I've opened single Barbie dolls with more twist ties than Tekno has.

It was all I could do to put him back in the box. He was adorable, and began performing various actions immediately. You do need to look in his manual to learn how to make him do some more complex actions, but he is certainly active enough from the get go to make any child happy. He walked very well on our thick carpet and I especially liked the nose sensor which stopped him when he ran into an obstruction, preventing that "walking in place" problem you get with more basic walking toys. His volume was fine, not too loud or annoying and he responded promptly to my voice. I can't truly judge his durability yet, but he seemed sturdy to me. Time will tell on that issue. He isn't really educational in nature, but I can see where he might be helpful in teaching a child responsibility. I'm sure my daughter is going to be head over heels about Tekno. I'm thinking about getting one myself!! A really charming toy!

My mom made me do work around the house to earn money so I can buy My own Tekno puppy. Believe me! It was not a waste. He responds when you call to him by barking or walking to you. He is totaly a cute little dog. I have baby cousins that came over for the Holidays, and they love to play with Tekno. They could not stop asking me to take him off the shelf to play with him. By the way, the reason he was on the shelf is because my parents didnt want the kids to break him. But the kids really did love him and treated him like he was a real puppy. They didnt grab his tail or any thing.Plus he does cool tricks. He can talk! And he does this really cool card trick too. I would totaly recomend it.

I just got Tekno about a week ago or so. Before I got him I decided to look at some reviews because the pup isn't televised much. Some bad reviews were begining to turn me off, but I kept researching and i begged and begged for one. Finally my dad bought me one and boy was i pleased! Tekno has a cute little walk and from what I've seen is better than poo-chi. But i haven't seen poo-chi yet so i'm not going to comment on him. I think that would be unfair just like if u hadn't seen tekno and talked bad about him! He's a great pup, does tricks, comes on command, wakes you up, and even on ur birthday he can sing you happy birthday! He hasn't fallen apart for me yet and i doubt he will. Parents I think this toy is educational for children because you have to learn to program it. I recrommend it for older children. Younger ones may have fun too though. I have an older brother who even likes him. I can tell even though he won't addmit it. Also kids, I think this toy is extreemly fun! Now I'm not hastleing u to get it, but it would probablly be a good idea!

There are so many different types of robot dogs that have come out on the market recently, and some newer ones that will be coming out by the end of this year. So far I think Tekno is the cutest and most fun.

I just wish the package wasn't such a pain to open. It comes in an attractive futuristic-looking carrying case with a neat handle, but unfortunately I literally had to cut open and destroy the package just to get Tekno out of the box. So I don't think I could have returned Tekno even if I wanted to because the box got destroyed. And the instructions were hidden INSIDE the box, the same instructions you need to read in order to get Tekno OUT of the box. It would have helped if they could print the instructions on how to open the box (is it possible without destroying the box?) on the OUTSIDE of the package.

Another thing: In the list of tricks it says Tekno can perform, it includes "Fetch". Well, I think they really mean "Walk" because Tekno can't really fetch anything, like say a ball or a stick, like a real dog can because he can't open his mouth to grab something to pick up and fetch. He seems to walk better on vinyl flooring rather than on carpet. But he's still a cute dog and fun to play with....

Tekno seems to be holding up just fine.

I'm glad I bought him. You may also be interested in Me and My Shadow - robot dog covered in plush material - gold, black or brown. And there's another robot dog coming out later, I think it's called I-Cybie, and I may want to order that, too.

It took hours to find a store that finally had this puppy but it was all worth it. Not only does he walk around after you and respond to your voice but he also plays neat tricks. He responds to love and attention just like a real puppy and is fun for all ages. This is definately the hot gift for chrismas and I'm glad I got it now. If you can find the dalmation get him because he's real rare. I have a silver tekno but i'm going to keep my eye out for the special edition dalmation.

Tekno rocks! For all you people I think that you should get Tekno. I think that Tekno is more better than Poo-Chi because for one thing it can walk and it's wayyyyyyyyy more realistic. And it's something simuliar then AIBO but alot more cheaper. Tekno is the bomb. If you want a dog but can't have one(like me) Tekno it's good to have Tekno. And even if you already have a dog it's always nice to have another robotic dog around to do alot of things with you that other dogs can't. Like a card trick. I love dogs and I think that you should get Tekno. It's good for any age.

I think Tekno the Electronic Robot Puppy is well worth buying. I have a Poo-Chi and Tekno is more fun to play with. Tekno walks ,shows emotion, and BEST of all has an on/off switch! Poo-Chi is cute, but my son and I soon lost interest in playing with it. We never get bored playing with Tekno. He is the closest thing to a real Puppy!
