2.0 out of 5 stars Wordy & Overpriced!, October 5, 2005
This review is from: (Un)Manly Citizens: Jean-Jacques Rousseau's and Germaine de Staël's Subversive Women (Hardcover)
Marso is excessive in her use of flowery language. Her writing is far too wordy to be enjoyed by the average reader. Many sentences take up an entire paragraph when the intended point could easily be made using far fewer words. I admit, I'm no scholar, but the work would be more fruitful if Marso's intended message were easier to comprehend. I found it necessary to reread every other paragraph in order to make connections, yet I was never certain of what Marso wished to communicate. With all of the excess in Marso's use of language, I mentally cried out, "Just say what you mean!" Furthermore, in my opinion the book is seriously overpriced. Nearly fifty dollars for a 165 page paperback seems excessive. Had it not been required reading for my class I would never have purchased it, much less finished reading it.
