Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 2–This tongue-in-cheek story follows the adventures of a boy who decides to take his family's 500 cows on a visit to the Falls. Manny soon finds that moving the insouciant bovines is rather daunting as they pack their hay; sprawl aboard buses; sing a cow-centric version of Old MacDonald Had a Farm; take over the rest areas; eat, play, and deposit some unwelcome–but udderly necessary–cow pies; and descend on the tourist attractions at their destination. When the bill from the shopaholic cows' visit to the gift shop threatens to bankrupt the boy, they pitch in by leaping over the Falls with buckets of milk that turns into butter, which they sell to eager tourists. All's well that ends well as Manny and the herd return home in cow-spotted limos–and readers see the recipe to shake their own butter into being. The crowded, breezy, watercolor-and-ink illustrations are similar in style to Susan Meddaugh's and William Steig's work. Becker throws in a few interesting mini-facts on cows and milking throughout the tale. (A cow must be milked 2 times a day, which makes 10 gallons of milk each day. There are 350 squirts in each gallon. 350 squirts x 10 gallons x 500 cows=1,750,000 squirts every day!) Far-fetched? Yes. Silly? Definitely. But kids will find themselves laughing at and falling for this goofy story.–Marge Loch-Wouters, Menasha's Public Library, WI

From Booklist

PreS-Gr. 2. Manny dreads the end of school each year, since "you can't exactly go on vacation when you have five hundred cows." A suggestion from his teacher inspires the boy to herd all 500 bovines (a surprisingly talkative, opinionated bunch) onto buses and head for Niagara Falls. Alternately whiny and rambunctious, the cows enjoy the trip to the fullest, but when their riotous foray into a gift shop ends in disaster, they must use their resources creatively to set matters right. The over-the-top story, full of fun and laced with amusing visual and verbal details (as well as a bit of potty humor), is accompanied by occasional sidebar facts about dairy cattle. The cows' outrageous comments and antics are bolstered by free-spirited ink drawings brightened with color. With an ending that hints of future excursions for the adventurous cows, this book provides one wild vacation, with the possibility of more fun to come. Carolyn Phelan

Sometimes a new children's book author/illustrator feels like a given. Well OF COURSE Suzy Becker has written a picture book. Sure, her only books until now have been "All I Need to Know I Learned from My Cat" and a humorous retelling of her own battle with cancer. But pick up, "Manny's Cows: The Niagara Falls Tale" and it feels like you've slipped into a comfortable pair of silly cow-related shoes. Becker is an ideal children's book illustrator. Her books are incredibly amusing, brilliantly penned, and now they've been oh-so-slightly tweaked to fit the picture book format. I don't know why it took Becker this long to bring us a book as wonderful as "Manny's Cows" and I don't care. What matters is that the book exists now. And it's wonderful.

You know what day Manny hates more than any other? The last day of school. "They should just cancel it", he grumbles. You see on the last day of school his teacher always asks the kids what they're going to do over their summer vacation. His answer? "Well, you can `t exactly go on vacation when you have five hundred cows". But when his teacher jokingly suggests he take the cows with him this year, Manny hits upon a plan. At first the cows are a little reluctant but once Manny's packed them into ten buses, they get into the swing of things. After the usual rest stops and ill-fated sing-a-longs the crew arrive at Niagara Falls. Unfortunately, one of the 500 cows is missing, so while the others go on a tour, Manny sets out to locate the missing bovine. She is, of course, parked in the bus enjoying the tiny television sets there. Unfortunately, this means that the remaining 499 cows have been raiding the gift store and Manny hasn't the pocket money to cover their purchases.

Manny hates the last day of school. In fact, you get the feeling that Many hates everything that has to do with days off from school."... you can't exactly go on vacation when you have five hundred cows," he explains. But what if you took them with you? Thus, Manny decides to embark on the zaniest vacation ever -- a field trip to Niagara Falls with his 500 charges.

This book is a blend of traditional picture book and comic book, with a bit of textbook thrown in. The result is spectacular -- and laugh-out-loud funny-- for kids and parents alike. In addition to the normal text, author/illustrator Suzy Becker includes humorous captions in the illustrations. She also sprinkles facts like "A cow drinks 30 gallons, or 500 glasses of water a day" to explain things like why there was a line of over 100 cows for the ladies room.

In short, Manny's Cows is a must read for any kid at heart.

My grandchildren both love Manny's Cows and the younger boy (3) usually picks it out at bedtime everytime he comes. There's just something hilarious about the thought of taking cows on vacation and there's cool factual stuff written on each page. Your children should enjoy this one.
